With the support of the Orissa Primary Education Programme Authority (OPEPA), a voluntary body, Pratham, is organising summer camps in 51,000 villages of the State with an intention to assure that maximum possible children are able to attainproficiency in reading, writing and arithmetic.

Pratham has devised unique and innovative approaches of learning from time to time such as learning camp mode. An annual status on education report, brought out by Pratham, showed that more than 50 per cent children in the age group of 6-14 years are not able to read passages at the Class II level in their mother tongue and the situation in arithmetic is even worse.

|
To engage the community with this unacceptable situation, Pratham has launched its 'Read India Campaign' in order to achieve the minimum age appropriate levels of learning through its accelerated learning methodology of Learning to Read (L2R). In Orissa, the campaign is christened as Padha Odisha, Gadha Odisha (Read Orissa, Build Orissa) to emphasise the obvious link between education and development in the State. The programme covered 192 blocks in 26 districts and touched more than 4 lakh children in its first phase.

In view of the success of the programme and the enthusiasm of the people from all walks of life, a Summer Learning Campaign has been planned to be conducted in 51,000 villages. The plan for the same is to be conducted for a one-month intensive drive in every village with volunteers trained in L2R. It is expected that interest in education, enrolment, and community participation will show measurable increase.

In an effort to make sure that no child is left without the basic competency of reading, writing and arithmetic, Pratham has devised the new approaches of learning from time to time such as the learning camp mode, where a mela (fair) is organised and children are encouraged to participate in activities leading to their learning enhancement.

A large number of leading educationists, NGO leaders and public figures representing the civil society gathered at a consultative meeting here to pledge support to the campaign.
