Greetings from Read Orissa Campaign. Kindly see below an outine of a summer campaign program being launched in Orissa. We request the involvement and participation of all like-midned NGOs who can spare their energy, time and resources for this purpose. Pratham will provide training and Teaching Learning material. We will be happy to see you in Education Campaign facilitated by Pratham Orissa.
We are going to organise a One Day Consultation on Summer Camp on 30th in Bhubaneswar (NCDS,near CYSD Bhubaneswar ) to bring us together and to discuss how to make the campaign a grand success. Please give your confirmation and valuable suggestion. Read Orissa Campaign will partially support the logistic expense of participant. (As per actual). Summer Learning Campaign 'Aasa Padhiba - 2008'
Goal:
Improve reading and arithmetic ability of all children in 6-14 age group in Orissa.
Objectives (Class wise):
Standard I & II (Including Pre-primary)
· Std I – All children should know alphabets and numbers. Read simple words.
· Std II – Al children should read simple sentences and solve basic addition/subtraction up to 100000.
Standard III-V
All children should be at least able to
l Read at least std II text with comprehension
l Solve subtraction with borrowing
l Simple multiplication sums
l Easy division problems
Coverage:
Each and every village of Orissa i.e. covering all primary and upper-primary schools.
Time line:
April 1st – May 15th 2008
Timing: 7 AM – 11 AM
7 AM – Prayer and Sports
8 AM – Reading
9 AM – Arithmetic
10 AM – Extra-curricular activities and Learning Shop
Strategy:
The following strategy would be used:
l Pretest for all class I - V children for reading and arithmetic levels.
l Third party sample testing for confirmation in 2 backward districts.
l Involve volunteers/AW workers/ School teachers/ parents from the same village for the classes
l Use attractive TLM for the children (i.e. Children news paper, flash cards, picture and story cards, story readers, fake currency and bundle-sticks etc)
l Involve OPEPA, District Administration, government teachers, UNICEF,NGO , IMA, PanchayatRaj members etc.
Learning Pack
The following would be included in the TLM:
1. Simple para and early level story cards for word level children
2. Matrakshar chart and alphabet cards for Nothing and letter level children
3. Sentence strips and word cards
4. Number chart
5. Fake currency notes
6. Bundle sticks and rubber bands
7. Picture trading cards
8. Black board
9. Chalk
10. Manual
11. Prizes in form of origami toys etc.
Responsibilities of Camp Coordinators:
Give the letters to the Sarpanch and get their buy-in
1. Finalize venue in the village (arrange a village meeting) and the duration
2. Finalize organizing committee
l Chairman – Ward member/Sarpanch
l Camp coordinator – Pratham volunteer (Self)
l Language teacher (Could be from school/Self)
l Maths teacher (Could be from school/Self)
l Games teacher (Could be from school/Self)
3. Survey the village (6-14 years) on first day of camp
4. Assess the children for reading/writing/arithmetic and appoint leaders
5. Colour code the children as per their level, group them and do activities in each group as per requirement
6. Have one hour of L2R activities and one hour arithmetic activities
7. Conduct intermediate test in 2 weeks and do a post-test at the end of the month and send report as per requirement
Evaluation and Collection of Data:
The testing tool would be like ASER and some minor changes would be admissible. Pattern would be Pre and Post and would include all children in the class. The result would be published on the total children basis and the sample checking would be administered by third party.
Schedule of Activities:
1. 15 days District-wide training-cum-pilot camp in Gajapati district (7 blocks – 129 panchayats – 1500 villages) - 1st April - 15th April
2. 15 days District level one panchayat pilot-cum-training camps in 30 districts for district team of volunteers between 15th April - 15th May
3. 15 days Block level one panchayat pilot-cum-training camps in all 314 blocks with block level teams of volunteers between 15th May – May 31st
4. 2-4 week village level camps in all 51000 villages in June 2008
