Adigital signature is an electronic, encrypted, stamp of authentication on digital information such as email messages, macros, or electronic documents. A signature confirms that the information originated from the signer and has not been altered.

Certificate authority (CA) A certificate authority is an entity similar to a notary public. It issues digital certificates, signs certificates to verify their validity and tracks which certificates have been revoked or have expired.

Notarization Signatures in Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, or Microsoft PowerPoint files, which are time stamped by a secure time-stamp server, under certain circumstances, have the validity of a notarization.

What I'd like to know is: does Windows actually verify the digital signature when it is shown in the Properties dialog, or does it merely indicate that the file contains a digital signature that may or may not be valid?

On Windows 8.1 the properties display for the file only displays a list of digital signatures. You have to highlight a signature and click Details before Windows will tell you if the signature is valid or not.

I went to the expense and bother of getting a code signing certificate. The first thing I did was sign an executable and then modify the executable to simulate tampering. If you select properties for the tampered file all you see is a digital signature with no warning if it is valid or not.

Windows comes with a certificate store that contains certificates from all the Trusted Root Certification Authorities (CAs). Windows can tell if one of these Authorities issued the certificate used to sign the executable by checking the signature against the certificates in the store.

So basically, the answer is yes, Window does ineed verify the digital signature. Note that it's up to the CA to make that the entity they sold the certificate to is who they claim to be. So when you trust the report that the executable comes from XYZZY software, you're doing so on the say-so of the CA.

Now it wont let me activate Windows and keeps coming up with the following error:

We cant activate Windows on this device because you don't have a valid digital license or product key. If you think you do have a valid license or key, select troubleshoot below. Error code: 0xC004C003

I purchased Windows 11 pro for my Lenovo laptop. I get the error message 0xC004C003 when I try to activate. I did not get an email or product key after my purchase. I see purchase history in my account?

Purchased my new Dell laptop, I had Windows 11. Went through the Settings > Systems > Activation ... Upgrade via Microsoft Store. Paid my $99 and then I ended up with a "Failed to activate". Under System > Activation, it displays "Windows 11 Enterprise".

As it is a problem related to Windows 11 I recommend that you post your question on the Windows 11 forum, as this is an upgrade issue and you may be having a problem with the update server and only the Windows 11 team will be able to reveal this to you.

I am having exactly the same problem as above but I am currently on Windows 10 home, trying to upgrade to windows 10 pro. I bought the digital license through the microsoft store and can see the receipt for my purchase.

Hi,

I found this really useful answer in a different chat and this worked for me and quite a few others. None of us needed the support link, the search for the default product key did the trick.

Once you enter it, it somehow links to the license you have bought.

"Windows requires a digitally signed driver A recently installed program tried to install an unsigned driver. This version of Windows requires all drivers to have a valid digital signature. The driver is unavailable and the program that uses the driver might not work correctly....npcap.sys"

This is an issue with the Npcap driver; that's still somewhat new code and may still have some rough edges. You should report it either to the Nmap mailing list or to Yang Luo, the developer - see the end of the main Npcap page for their e-mail addresses.

And I rechecked this issue and it turned out that Pascal is right, you need to install that update to enable the SHA2 in Windows 7, otherwise Npcap will be regarded as a non-signed software and forbidden to be installed on Windows.

Hi, I just tried to install 0.06-R4 and 0.05-r14, the issue is still there. W7 doesn't complain about signed driver, but the npf service creation fails. If I run the "NPFInstall.exe -i" I have to following return: Npcap LWF driver has failed the installation.

Ok, I just tried to install on a fresh W7 (no Microsoft upgrades), and it worked. So now what can I do to understand why there is this conflict on my system? install and uninstall process of winpcap works just fine.

Can the installer be made to report why the installation failed? Is there some way to determine why the service creation failed and, if not, are there any changes that could be made to Npcap to provide more information?

You could run "net start npf" in CMD, it should return some information about why fails. And moreover, you can try to install Npcap with "Install Npcap in WinPcap API-compatible Mode" UNCHECKED, to see if npcap.sys can be installed or not. Just another name for npf.sys.

Installing with "WinPcap API-compatible Mode" UNCHECKED fails with the same issue, when trying to install the driver. I tried to start the service manually via net start, and W7 tells me it's already started.

We are offboarding a hundred plus Dell Latitude E7470 and 7480 model laptops by reimaging them with base Windows 10 Pro, and about a quarter of them fail to activate Windows 10 Pro due to not having a valid digital license.

I have also tried the Dell OS Recovery Tool at -uk/drivers/osiso/recoverytool, which actually checks the Dell serial against Dell's database and knows that it has a Windows 10 Pro License. Units that fail to activate via WDS/PXE, fail to activate using this tool to install as well.

Windows 10 bulk licenses for laptops are unique to those devices and can not be transferred or so I heard rumors. I have seen this statement before but, I am not 100% sure about it, as it was also complemented with rumors of pirated licenses coming up as laptop bulk licenses with Microsoft verification system.

Windows 10 licenses are not transferable from one PC to another. At the first activation of the license, the motherboard series, the processor as well as the HDD are transmitted to microsoft. it is a real problem and the replacement of an HDD

To verify authenticity, the validator checks if the signer's certificate or its parent certificates are trusted. The validity of the signing certificate is also checked based on the user's Acrobat or Acrobat Reader settings.

You can set verification preferences in advance so digital signatures are valid when you open a PDF and verification details appear with the signature. When Digital Signatures are validated, an icon appears in the document message bar to indicate the signature status.

In Acrobat or Acrobat Reader, the signature of a certified or signed document is valid if you and the signer have a trust relationship. The trust level of the certificate indicates the actions for which you trust the signer.

You can right-click a signature field in the Signatures panel to do most signature-related tasks, including adding, clearing, and validating signatures. In some cases, however, the signature field becomes locked after you sign it.

When document integrity is critical for your signature workflow, you can enable 'View documents in Preview mode', and then sign the document. This feature analyzes the document for content that may alter the look and feel of the document and suppresses such content to allow you to view and sign the document in a static and secure state.

Certifying a PDF means approving its contents and specifying what changes are allowed for the document to remain certified. For example, a government agency creates a form with signature fields and certifies it, allowing users to only change form fields and sign the document. Removing pages or adding comments will result in losing the certified status.

A certifying signature can only be applied if the PDF has no other signatures. These signatures can be visible or invisible, and a blue ribbon icon in the Signatures panel confirms a valid certifying signature. Adding a certifying digital signature requires a digital ID.

Acrobat allows users to add a document timestamp to a PDF without needing an identity-based signature. To timestamp a PDF, a timestamp server is needed. See how to configure a timestamp server.

A timestamp guarantees the authenticity and existence of a document at a specific time and complies with ETSI 102 778 PDF Advanced Electronic Signatures (PAdES) standard.

If the signature status is unknown or unverified, manually validate it to identify the issue and find a potential solution. In case the signature status is invalid, you must contact the signer to resolve the issue.

To trust a certificate, it must be added to the user's trusted identity list in the Trusted Identity Manager. Also, its trust level must be set manually. End users can exchange certificates or add them directly from signed documents and set their trust levels. However, enterprises may require employees to validate signatures without any manual intervention. Acrobat trusts all certificates that are signed and certified by a trust anchor. Therefore, administrators can preconfigure client installations or allow end users to add a trust anchor. For more information on trusting certificates, see About certificate-based signatures.

You can sign component PDFs within a PDF Portfolio, or sign the PDF Portfolio as a whole. Signing a component PDF locks the PDF for editing and secures its content. After signing all the component PDFs, you can sign the entire PDF Portfolio to finalize it. Alternatively, you can sign the PDF Portfolio as a whole to lock the content of all component PDFs simultaneously.
