I have written some VHDL code which compiles fine in Quartus Prime Lite edition. I'd now like to setup a test bench in order to simulate the code. I'm following a tutorial by Intel (link to youtube video) which says that after analysis and synthesis I go to tools -> run simulation tool -> RTL simulation. This launches modelsim. I have the student version installed with the license key placed in the root install directory. When I right click on my entity to try and select "create wave" this button is greyed out which it is not in the tutorial. I've shown this below:

Does anyone know where I can find the download for modelsim? When I downloaded Quartus prime lite edition 21.1 edition, it had no modelsim in the setup and in intel's website, I could not find the application in the download center.

Mech engr student here who's just really curious about hardware design, fpga's and hdl. I wanna get my feet wet with a free simulator if I can but am very confused by the availability of certain simulators. Does modelsim still exist? Is it now just questasim? Can I run questasim without downloading quartus lite? I'm a broke student who can't afford a physical board at the moment, so I thought a simulator would be a good way for me to become acquainted with some of the workflows and with writing vhdl and verilog. If anyone can clear these matters up for me that'd be a huge help. Thanks!

But then vsim fails because it cannot find a modelsim_ase/linuxaloem/../tcl/tcl8.6/init.tcl. - the tcl directory is obviously missing in 20.1. IMHO this is a broken install , because I have a running 19.1 installation and there modesim_ase has a tcl directory - unfortunately tcl8.5 instaead of tcl8.6

I'm starting my project on the Front End Design Using Cadence Tool for Virginia Tech. So I will need NCVerilog and SimVision. Where can I get a student copy? Or perhaps, I could also use the ModelSIM student edition, not sure what to start with though.

We have a University program - it's not a "free student copy", but there is a mechanism for Universities to get access to Cadence software at a massively reduced price. See -www/global/en_US/home/company/cadence-academic-network/university-software-program.html - this has email contacts so you can then ask who is the contact at your University responsible for the program. I see Virginia Tech are already one of the member universities on the list that's linked to from that page.

When you install Quartus, you have the option of installing the Starter edition or the regular edition. If you accidentally installed the regular edition, you would get this license issue. If you have the modelsim_ase directory as mentioned, then you installed the correct version and should check the environment variables.

Questa Sim offers high-performance and advanced debugging capabilities, while ModelSim PE is the entry-level simulator for hobbyists and students.[2] Questa Sim is used in large multi-million gate designs, and is supported on Microsoft Windows and Linux, in 32-bit and 64-bit architectures.[2]

You can quickly fix that by going to the installation directory (C:\intelFPGA0.1\modelsim_ase) and editing the modelsim.ini file with administrator privileges. Change the TranscriptFile setting to a different path. For example, the installation directory, as shown below.

hello, thanks for the pretty extensive guide and it provide to be very informative and helpful. Is there anyway to obtain the modelsim pe student edition without the university license as seimens seems to have discontinued the individual installations.
