Description: Initially published in 1974, this book continues to be that gold standard for nursing practice in both the classroom as well as across the healthcare continuum. The 11th edition has been updated to address the challenges of the current healthcare environment that sees the patient at the center of their care and advocates for nursing to provide care in all settings in order to assure excellent transitions of care. The 10th edition was published in 2014.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide a comprehensive, easy-to-use, evidence-based guide for students and nurses across all care settings to meet the needs of the patient according to established standards of care and in order to maintain, promote, or restore patient health. This well organized, practical book meets this objective.
Audience: The intended audience is students and nurses in educational and/or practice settings. The author, who has a long successful history with this book, has collected an excellent group of contributors that is a nice blend of academicians and practitioners.
Features: This excellent book provides well organized chapters that are easy to follow, loaded with bolded sections and bulleted information, making it an easy-to-use reference. Pictures, tables, and appendixes complement each chapter. The comprehensive reference is divided into five sections on nursing process and practice, medical-surgical nursing, maternity and neonatal nursing, pediatric nursing, and psychiatric nursing. Each section follows a similar format and includes both the medical and nursing practice model. Innovative topics such as genetics, health promotion/preventive care, and ethics are covered. In addition, chapters are overflowing with important pearls such as standards of care and evidence-base care resources, geriatric-specific information, and transitional care alerts.
Assessment: Overall, this is an excellent, comprehensive, and practical resource that is evidence-based and easy to use. It is essential that this book be within reach of not only student nurses, but also novice or more experienced clinical practice nurses in any setting across the healthcare continuum. A must have for any nurse's library!
