cant install devtools on fedora 28

Hi,

Trying to install devtools on Fedora 28 workstation with R. I keep getting this:

Warning messages:

1: In install.packages("devtools") :

  installation of package ‘git2r’ had non-zero exit status

2: In install.packages("devtools") :

  installation of package ‘devtools’ had non-zero exit status

I have tried to install git2r but get the same error message.

Any help is appreciated.

I did this at the commandline-  
$ sudo -i R

Then this in R:

> install.packages('devtools')

and it worked
