I connect from one UBUNTU computer to another one.
In the remote desktop I can start gui-programs, e.g. gpartet via the menue: System -> Administration -> gparted.

However, when I try to start gparted from a terminal window, I get "cannot open display: :0.0

How should I set the DISPLAY variable, or what else need I to do?

Ehm... are you sure you're in the right place? rdesktop is for accessing
Windows machines.

A: Because it messes up the order in which people normally read text.
Q: Why is top-posting such a bad thing?

rdesktop can connect to a Linux computer as well, not only Windows.

I'm afraid it's not really something we target with this project. Our
focus are the currently supported servers from Microsoft.

Your issue doesn't really sound like a client issue though if you're
having problems starting programs in the remote desktop. I suggest you
check with the project for your RDP server and see if they have any ideas.
