1) Saturday discussion forum
SATURDAY, 18 JUNE, 6:00PM, REVOLUTION BOOKS.
TOPIC: LATEST ISSUE OF "REVOLUTION" NEWSPAPER
We'll read from and discuss some articles from the latest issue of "Revolution"
newspaper. Topics include analysis of Christian Fascism, & how the Democrats are
no answer to such problems; continuing repression of professor Ward Churchill;
the hell of life in capitalist China today; the latest from the revolution in
Nepal; & more. Get your copy at Revolution Books (see our webpage,
http://rcybsea.blogspot.com , for a list of other places you can get it in
Seattle & Tacoma) or read online at
http://revcom.us/wh-new.htm.
This is a weekly event: discussion about revolution or other topics from a
revolutionary communist perspective. It usually lasts a couple hours. The format
is that one or a few people give a short introduction around the week's topic,
which is a basis for everyone digging into some key issues about why & how we
need communist revolution. All honest people are welcome (i.e. no police spies,
people who just want to attack us, etc).
Revolution Books is located at 1833 Nagle Pl. This is on Capitol Hill, one small
block east of the Broadway/Denny intersection. Buses are 43, 49, 60. Please
spread the word about this event. See you all there!
2) Forwarded message from October 22nd Coalition on WTO story in "Seattle Weekly"
Some of you may have noticed that the Seattle Weekly ran a front-page article in
their June 1-7 2005 issue about former Seattle Police Chief Norm Stamper and his
new book entitled "Breaking Rank". Basically, both the book and the article are
an attempt to reinforce the rewriting of the facts of the WTO protests in Seattle
on November 30, 1999 that was previously done by multiple corporate media
sources. An entire chapter of Mr. Stamper's book, called "Snookered in Seattle:
The WTO Riots", was included as an excerpt in that issue without any attempt to
give voice to those who believe Mr. Stamper's characterizations of the protests
were wildly inaccurate. We suspect numerous letters to the editor were sent to
the Seattle Weekly in response to the article/excerpt, and we in fact sent one of
those letters. Our letter (provided below) was not printed by the Seattle Weekly,
but a very good one by Kirsten Anderberg (linked below) was printed. This shows
the need for alternative media, and that "letters to the editor" campaigns likely
will have only limited success, depending upon the issue - and given the current
portrayal of police as the only thing protecting people from
terrorists/violence/etc, the issue of police brutality is rarely critically
analyzed. For those of you interested in educating others or yourself, we have
available for a minimum $1 donation (to recover the cost of the tape) a VHS tape
of persons speaking before the Seattle City Council in the weeks after the WTO
protests about the police violence and bigotry they experienced at the WTO
protests; especially riveting were the accounts given by people who were tortured
in jail after being arrested. This compilation lasts approximately 30 minutes;
you can contact us for a copy of it via the information provided at the end of
this email.

Our letter to the editor:
Regarding last week's WTO articles, it's difficult to know who is most in denial:
Norm Stamper, Nina Shapiro, or her editor. We are, and have recorded others who
are, first-hand witnesses that can verify our version of the WTO POLICE riot:
police violently replied to non-violent civil disobedience for many hours before
relatively modest property destruction occurred. Yet, Mr. Stamper lists the
"disciplined" training police received prior to the WTO; did that training
include ripping gas masks off calmly-sitting protesters and dousing them
point-blank with pepperspray, as happened on 11/30/99? Mr. Stamper lists the
"infinite variety" of projectiles supposedly thrown at police wearing protective
gear, without mentioning the THOUSANDS of rubber bullets police indiscriminately
shot at the head/chest of protesters wearing nothing protective (an unprosecuted
war crime). Mr. Stamper repeats the discredited, but frequently reused,
allegation of protesters using Molotov cocktails, without providing evidence of
their detonation, since there isn't any. Mr. Stamper notes with satisfaction the
"police perimeter" established 12/1/99, without noting a court ruling declaring
that "no-protest zone" a violation of the thing police are supposedly sworn to
uphold - our constitution.
Disgustingly, Nina Shapiro uncritically repeats Stamper's contention "an honest
mistake" killed an unarmed African American (Eddie Anderson) when a policeman's
gun "went off accidentally." An inquest found the force needed to fire the gun
precluded an accidental discharge. Like the typical corporate media reporter, Ms.
Shapiro failed to provide easily-obtained facts to substantiate allegations of
current police racism, such as the Racial Disparity Project's finding that in
Seattle Blacks are 22 times more likely to be arrested on drug charges than
Whites. Believing such "liberal" reporters/police is one aspect of what would
move this country to the right.
