Has MAG, PUFF or Tyng looked into developing an gun system similar to an AEG airsoft gun?
Would appear to eliminate the need for an air tank which would possibly open up tank design considerations.....

Airsoft gearboxes you refer to do not produce enough air for a paintball. You would need a huge piston with a large port for air release. Plus this would need to be a completely homemade system which I think your implying. It sounds good to me. I mean I might do a little math during school today and come up with how large of a piston one would require. A gearing with rack and pinion gears would be simple. Even at that it's still a daunting task. I just don't think that you will get enough air moving to properly propel the round. Unless you had a huge spring with an equally powerful motor and gear train. It would simplify loading though.
Standard airsoft BB- .12, .20 gram
Standard paintball- about 4 grams

It would be nice to have an idea of what would be needed , thank you if you get the chance. I know some people who could help me to work out the mechanical end of things.
After all, Nevada does have those "secret" areas that don't exist.

A 50 cal paintball would be more efficient and easier for this
purpose.

I pretty much agree.  After picking up a 50 cal paintball gun for my current semi-secret project, I was amazed at how small and compact the marker was.  They are supposedly very efficient and would require smaller than the usual size CO2 bottles.  In fact, the semi-secret project is rather cramped for internal space, but a small 3.5 or 5 ounce bottle fits perfectly.  :)

I tried the Kingman Training Chaser 0.43 marker about a year ago.
It often chops paint and is not very accurate. I do not
recommend it.
