Hey everyone! Hope you all are doing well and staying safe. Things have been a bit quiet here for quite some time. Lately I've been working on rebuilding my M22 Locust into a working tank again. Two days of hard battling (her first battle) in Gettysburg brought out a lot of shortcomings. The major ones were poor power, weak tracks that broke a lot of teeth off, and 3d printed sprockets and idlers that didn't take the stress well. So, to fix all that I'm installing 250w M01 motors, casting plastic tracks, and making new sprockets and idlers out of plywood.
Attached are a few pics of my progress. I hope to post more updates here frequently to hopefully get some conversations going and maybe motivate anyone that's building a tank out there. Maybe we'll have a battle this year.

Very nice !

I've been wondering about 3d printing the molds directly, as opposed to printing a master part and then making a rubber mold. If the mold was printed in PLA and waxed and treated with mold release, do you think cast parts would come out OK ?

Foli could print in tpu and have a flexible mold

Thanks guys!

Interesting idea, Doug. Depending on the shape of your part it might work. The one concern that comes to mind is the micro-ridges from the layers. I wonder if they might keep the part from coming out, and since the mold will be solid it won't bend out to release the part. Maybe a two piece mold? Idk. If you try it out be sure to share the results!

Been plugging away today. Got one track done and the other over half way. They look really good. I'm excited to get the motors hooked up.

Just make sure the motors are really secure.  I broke my wood motor mounts in my M113 using those motors.  They have tons of torque.  I had to reinforce the slides around the motors in the KV-1 also.  Didn't realize they were moving around so much until I watched them one day as I moved the tank forward and reverse.

Working on that. Going to cut a 1/8" aluminum plate to cover the bottom of the motor bay and cut slots to adjust chain tension. Bolts will run up from the bottom. Little bit of a hassle but hopefully it'll be a "set it and forget it" situation.

Took the Locust for a test drive today. Ran at 12v just to test everything. It's a little slow but now that things look good it'll be wired for 24v.

Yeah! Loads of torque. Traction is good too. Had no trouble climbing some very steep, dirt grades. I'm pretty happy. Only real issue is zero turns in thick grass throws tracks more often than not. That is probably just the nature of the track design more than anything.

Throwing tracks could be a bunch of issues.  Could be the overall alignment, could be the tension, could be the suspension is too loose, the guide horns could be too small, etc.  Is it throwing them from the drive sprocket or the idler end?  If it's on the sprocket end you could do a channel down the middle of the sprocket or use something like the Abrams on the outside shown in the pics.  I try to use stiffer springs on the very front and very last suspension arms to keep track tension more consistent.  Neutral turns put a lot of lateral stress on tracks.  I haven't had any issues with them, but I'm using steel track that has minimal lateral movement once mounted on the tank.

The track would twist under the first roadwheel and get pushed off. Could be an issue with tension like you said. Wired the batteries in series for 24v and speed is so much better. I tightened the tracks a bit more and it seems the combination of speed + tension is keeping the tracks on better. Will test further in the morning.

24v is where it's at! Speed is great and with more tension the tracks stay on much better. Who wants to battle?!

Juggling several different projects now, but slowly working on installing an active suspension. Trying to make it resemble the real thing a little even though the mechanics are nothing similar. Lol

Put in an intense day yesterday and got the suspension completely assembled. Testing today shows it works really well but is gonna take some tweaking to make it perfect.
