Guys, I'm building an old Airtronics Oly II and will be powering it with an electric motor. Can anyone give me info on what sort of power options I need to look at?

I already have an Oly 650 powered with a Hacker a20-20l and it is by far my favorite relaxing flyer. Taught me why they call them gas bags. Hope this turns out just as nice.

Thanks

I really like My Hi-MAx 2812 1080 on 3s 1650 lipo. I use one on my EX Glider and it will do 6-7 30-second vertical climb-outs to OOS.
The oly is a bit heavier, but this little motor will get-er-done! (~$50)

I have an old OlyII  that I converted to electric. Nothing pretty. I cut the nose off 1" behind the nose block and put in a 1/4" ply motor mount with a couple degrees of down thrust. Motor is a Turnigy C3536-1300 ($10 used).ESC is a no name 40 amp w/brake ($20 used), battery is a PowerUp lipo 3s 2200mah 20c ($20 for 2 used). This OlyII was 43oz as a pure sailplane and is 44oz with this power system. It climbs near vertical at 3/4 throttle and gives 8-10 climbs to 1 1/2 winch height. 40 min. in dead air are the norm. YES Gordy I DO restart the motor.
I had a wing flutter under power and in a dive the first season.  When I recovered the wing I cut in bottom D-tube sheeting and the flutter hasn't been a problem since.
This old Oly II is a blast to fly and I fly it more as a motor glider than I did as a pure sailplane

75 watts per pound(a bit over 200 watts in this case, I'd guess) is more than adequate, but if you want to fly vertical, then I suppose you need a lot more. Possibly somewhat more for ALES. I'd guess you'd want maybe a 10 inch prop or larger. (I used a 6 inch prop on a 1.5 meter glider and it was just fine.) That's assuming a prop matched to your power system. I've also assumed you're willing to fly it up instead of hanging on the prop.

If you keep the weight down and don't add a whole lot of drag, you are in for a treat. The Oly II is a very nice handling glider. ('sailplanes' are for those with bigger egos). I think the last time I flew mine (without the ugly spinning thing) it spent at least 5 minutes upside down, keeping it low enough to see. Have to admit the handling is fairly poor when flown upside down, though.
