Professor of Political Science, University of Leeds
Date: Fri. 28 Sept. 2018
Time: 13.15 - 15.15
Venue: Meeting Room, 4th Floor of Operation Building,

Duncan McCargo is professor of political science at the University of Leeds
and visiting professor of political science at Columbia University. He has
published widely on Thailand's politics and is a regular visitor to Cambodia.
In this presentation, Duncan McCargo discusses the phenomenon of urbanized
villagers. Scholars of Southeast Asia have typically divided people into two
major categories, urban and rural. But what happens to those who fall nearly
in neither category, or belong equally to both? In Cambodia and Thailand,
election outcomes are largely determined by the preferences of people who work
mainly in work and around the capital city, but are legally registered to vote in
their 'home' villages. He will discuss the social and political impacts of
this split identity phenomenon and ways in which the associated problems might be
best addressed.
