About the topic: Andrew will provide an overview of land use framework in Oregon and Portland, and then talk in depth about the ways in which the City of Portland government engages communities around issues of land use, particularly through the lens of housing, which is his area of expertise. He will focus on a few specific cases in which there's been conflict between local residents and the government, and discuss about current situation or how it will be resolved in the future.
About the speaker: Prior to joining 1000 Friends in May of 2016, Andrew Riley spent 6 years as a policy wonk, lobbyist, and community organizer on issues ranging from housing affordability and economic development to police accountability and immigration reform. In those roles, he has worked with the Center for Intercultural Organizing, Oregon Health Equity Alliance, OPAL Environmental Justice, Community Alliance of Tenants, and Common Cause Oregon. Andrew was born and raised in Portland (minus a few years he spent in the cornfields of Iowa in elementary school), and holds a BA in Sociology/Anthropology and Latin American Literature from Lewis & Clark College.
