The original Planet 5 radio system has proved to be a good, reliable,
set to use. All the reports were very favourable, especially regarding
power use.
There were very few problems, and most of those were caused by water
getting into the Rx.
The current version has had the Rx modified by the manufacturers to
incorporate a 'fail safe' into Channel 1.
We use Channel 1 for sail control.
There seems to be an unfortunate side effect to this 'fail safe'
addition. It seems that, on switching on and during the time it takes
for the system takes to lock on, the winch turns, presumably hunting
for a signal. If the boat was not left 'just right', then the winch
can turn far enough to pull the shock absorbing spring system around
the drum, or worse. It's very off-putting!
There is nothing that the manufacturer is prepared to do about this.
Having thought about the problem, and I am no Einstein, the answer
just might be very simple.
We currently use Channels 1 and 2. If we can move away from Channel 1
then the problem moves away too.
I have tried this, and it works on the workbench, though as yet I have
not used it in anger, on the water ( I am still in the age of 40MHz)
It's not difficult, but keep logical, make a simple wiring diagram and
don't rush
1. open the Tx....6 screws, move the back cover clear
2. inside, bottom left, a largish green circuit board...remove 2
locating screws to free it up
3. check the wiring from the sail toggle. It is Channel 1 Black/
Yellow/Red
Channel 2 Black/Orange/Red
These appear on the left side of the long white plug. Ease the
plug free from the circuit board
4. use a thin blade to lift the white locating pins and remove the 6
wires....don't mix them up, remember that there is no
hurry and that each switch needs to retain its own set of wires
5. replace the wires as Black/Orange/Red and Black/Yellow/Red. Replace
them as a set, NOT just the middle wire!!! Make sure they are bedded
down to the plug
6. put it all back together again
problem solved!
Any comments?
