The details for the Wilmington Memorial Day Parade are listed below.
Members from our post, as well as, a couple of others have already
committed to participating. We'll be marching under the Department's banner
as a group. This is an opportunity for all of our Legionnaires, Auxiliary
members, Sons (of the American Legion) and Legion Riders to participate. If
you are not able to walk the parade route, there will be transportation
available. If you are totally shy and / or you know someone in the
audience, we could certainly use a picture or two for our scrapbooks. The
dress code of the day will be post polos and / or patriotic polos for post
18 and its organizations. I can't speak for the other posts, but would
highly recommend the same due to the weather. It is usually pretty warm.
Last year, we made a very impromptu decision to meet afterwards for dinner
at Stoney's. I'd like to extend the invitation to get together after the
parade in advance. This is informal and will be at the individual's
expense.
Please advise if you need any further information and consider joining
us!!! So far, it looks like this year might be the largest group we have
had in a number of years. :)
Thank you!!!!!

Dear Friend:
On behalf of Wilmington’s Memorial Day Committee, we solicit your
financial support to sponsor and make possible the 2011 Wilmington
Memorial Day Parade.
This year marks the 144th consecutive observance of the traditional
Memorial Day, May 30, in Wilmington. The tradition began in 1868,
when a group of New Castle County citizens formed a Memorial Day
Committee to honor those who died in the Civil War.
The parade lines up at 5:15 p.m. and steps out at 6:00 p.m., May 30,
from Delaware Ave. at Woodlawn Ave.. Participants march east down
Delaware Avenue to the Civil War Monument at Broom St., where we
honor the dead of all wars with a memorial service.
We feel it is important, as we know you do, to pass on the tradition
to our young people of honoring those who have given their lives for
our country.
Your support financially will help to defray our parade costs and be
a tribute to those who have died for our country.
For your convenience, our sponsor contract is enclosed with this
letter.
Please call our Secretary, Cassie Cathell, at (302) 994-2061 with any
questions.
Sincerely,
Paul L. Cathell, Jr., Chairman
