Did You Know?
Here are some familiar names who placed in the IBC back in the day. Larry Garner won it all in 1988; Matthew Skoller took third in 1996; Dave Keyes was the winner in 2000.
And how about 1994? Michael Burks was third and Susan Tedeschi was second. Who got first? The Hardway Connection from Washington DC. Someone please tell us about this band then and where are they today? BTW, Michael Burks got the best guitarist award.
This century saw these performers participating before most of us heard of them: Matthew Stubbs (now with Charlie Musselwhite), the late BMA nominee Robin Rogers, Blind Pig recording artist Damon Fowler, BMA nominees Barbara Blue, Albert Castiglia, Sugaray Rayford, Brandon Santini, Big Joe Shelton, and Teeny Tucker. A few other names you will see on the festival circuit: Mac Arnold, Randy Oxford, Bill 'Howl-N-Madd' Perry, The Forty-Fours, among many others.
Bob Seger has a new CD out this month Ride Out. That seems enough reason to auction an autographed copy of his 1976 breakout double live album Live Bullet. Shaun Murphy, who has sung backup for Bob for many years, secured Bob's signature for The Blues Foundation when he performed in Memphis in December 2011. Shaun has her own current release out entitled Cry of Love. Bid here
Fall Back into the Blues
As we do each November 1, we will conduct a drawing from among our current membership for a cabin for two on the January 2015 Legendary Rhythm & Blues Cruise. A trip of lifetime for one lucky Blues Foundation member and their guest.
In addition to the cruise prize, members will also have the chance to win other great prizes including:
Gibson Guitar autographed by George Thorogood
Sony Legacy Taj Mahal 13 CD sets
Sony Legacy Stevie Ray Vaughan 3 CD + 1 DVD sets
Memphis Horns 25th Anniversary poster autographed by Wayne Jackson, Robert Cray, David Porter, Otis Clay, Johnny Rivers and Michael McDonald
Stevie Ray Vaughan prints by Michael Maness
And a special prize to the person who recruits the most members.
Join or renew to be included in the November 1 drawing. Every $25 you spend in membership gives you another chance to win! You will want to be a member anyway since voting for the Blues Music Awards is by members only and begins in mid-December.
Blues Hall of Fame
Nora J. Tucker has joined The Blues Foundation as Manager and Curator for the Blues Hall of Fame. Formerly the project manager for Design 500 Inc., she has consulted with The Blues Foundation since 2007 when it first explored the feasibility of offering an educational attraction within its headquarters.
In her new position, she will continue the search for artifacts, images, and media files for Blues Hall of Fame inductees. She'll also be planning all aspects of managing the attraction and overseeing its daily operations when in opens next year.
Tucker joined Design 500 Inc., a museum planning and exhibit design firm, in 2006. Her projects included curatorial work for the Gateway to the Blues Museum in Tunica, MS and exhibit and film projects for the Elvis Presley Birthplace in Tupelo, MS.
Tucker has a BA in Sociology from the University of South Florida, a MS in Library Science from the University of Tennessee, and a Graduate Certificate in Museum Studies from the University of Memphis. Her love of music goes deep - she spent ten years in record retail management and currently plays in three musical groups. She served as a Backbeat singing tour guide from 2007 until 2013.
"I have one thing to say," states Tucker. "Dream job."
Welcome aboard Nora!!!
31st International Blues Challenge
Tickets? Tee-shirts? Lodging? All is available now at blues.org. The 31st International Blues Challenge will be held January 20-24, 2015 in Downtown Memphis, Tennessee in the Beale Street Historic District.
In other IBC-related news, Blues Foundation member Jenn Ocken has started a crowd funding campaign to get the pre-orders rolling in and to raise funds for producing her IBC photo memoirs entitled Blues on Beale Street Memoirs of the International Blues Challenge. Her goal is to fund the printing of 1000 books and the subsequent donation of 20% of the proceeds to Generation Blues. Her campaign ends November 21, 2014! For complete details, visit here Blues on Beale Street Crowd Funding Site HERE.
Blues Music Award
The 35th Blues Music Awards show from this past May has been edited and will be available for your local public television to download from the satellite on October 18. This is the earliest release in years. The DVD is in The Blues Store HERE.
The 36th Blues Music Awards will be May 7, 2015. Around December 15, we will announce the nominees, begin voting and begin selling tickets and provide host hotel booking information. The 36th could be one of the biggest yet as it will coincide with the Grand Opening of the Blues Hall of Fame.
Make your hotel reservation for 36th Blues Music Awards now! In order to maximize the number rooms available to blues fans at the Sheraton Downtown Memphis, book now. There is a lot of competition for rooms in downtown Memphis during the month of May so the sooner you reserve, the greater chance to book a room across the street from the Cook Convention Center-the venue for the 36th Blues Music Awards. In the spring of 2014, many blues fans were unable to stay at the Sheraton and had trouble finding any room downtown because the rooms had been sold to visitors coming to Memphis for some reason other than blues music!! And in 2015, we expect record crowds for the 36th Blues Music Awards as they will be paired with the Grand Opening of the Blues Hall of Fame the next day on May 8. As soon as you know you are coming, reserve your room. (There is a non-refundable one night reservation fee). We can all but guarantee that you will not be able to book a room there next spring! Reserve by calling 866-716-8106 or book online HERE!
With respect to the 2015 nomination process, the three-step nomination procedure is set forth HERE. Act now because the deadline is October 24.
Website
The IBC Award Search function of the website is complete!! It lists all the known winners beginning with a single winner in 1984 and progressing 1in 2014 to
Band: 1st, 2nd, 3rd and Gibson Guitarist; Solo/Duo: 1st, 2nd and St. Blues Guitarist; Lee Oskar Harmonica and Best Self-Produced CD.
Well it is complete except for two things: (1) the errors you find that I did not and (2) the information we do not know. In both cases, if you find or know something, let me know.
Known unknowns include:
1984-second and third place (if there was such a thing??)
1987-any results?
1989-second and third place?
1991-third place?
1997-and the blues society of third place finisher Blue Steel?
1998-- One source says there was a tie for 3rd Cotton Candy & So Many Men (Kansas City Blues Society) and Kirk Smithart (Beale Street Blues Society) and the other says Cotton got 3rd and Kirk Smithart got Albert King Award
2000-- Albert King/Best Guitarist Award
Please and Thank You
Please help us preserve the stature and sanctity of the Blues Hall of Fame. Since September 2011, The Blues Foundation has been working to establish the bricks and mortar Blues Hall of Fame, the physical complement to the induction ceremonies that have been held every year since 1980. In the process, we have been asked about another individual who purports to have his own blues "hall of fame" using the blueshalloffame(dot)org domain. The short answer is that there is absolutely no connection between us and that individual or website. The Blues Foundation's use of the term "Blues Hall of Fame" predates that individual's use by almost 20 years. The Blues Foundation is working with legal counsel to protect its intellectual property rights related to our "Blues Hall of Fame," considered in the industry and worldwide as the ultimate recognition in blues music. As part of our efforts to protect our intellectual property, The Blues Foundation is pursuing remedies with the United States Patent and Trademark Office ased on our prior use. We ask that our members, including performers and affiliates, support us in our efforts to protect and preserve the honor, legitimacy and worldwide recognition that so deservedly accompanies an induction into the Blues Hall of Fame by The Blues Foundation.
Please consider purchasing a tee-shirt in the Blues Store. When you wear it you will be helping spread the word and in a very practical way, you will help us prepare for our move back to 421 South Main when Blues Hall of Fame construction is completed. Reduce Joe and Cindi's future workload by freeing them from packing and moving these a second time!
Thanks to member Marshall Lawrence. Earlier this year at the IBC, he filmed his Why I Love the Blues web series. They have 9000 views so far. Here is the URL to all the episodes. https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLbq5saN7nPE9M9UN3W-WhUm4uWVy8iQv4
Thanks to the four Blues Foundation members who came forward to pay the balance on Sista Monica's Raise the Roof! pledge so that her name could go on the Donor Wall. Rest in Peace Sista Monica.

In this space, I often talk about a blues book I have recently read. As such, my flashback might be more accurately called an enlightenment or a revelation. I recently completed Woman With Guitar Memphis Minnie's Blues by Paul & Beth Garon. This is an update from its first publication in 1992. As is expected from these two, this biographical study is very extensively researched and documented. This book brings additional investigative work to light but also offers analysis and insight into Memphis Minnie's place in the anything but linear development of blues during her long career, from the classic blues period (sophisticated professional women singers) to the country blues heyday (semi-professional downhome male singers) to the more urban swinging combos and Chicago blues bands .
The Mississippi Blues Trail marker for Memphis Minnie is actually located at her grave site just west of Walls, MS which is just a few miles into MS south of Memphis.
The Blues Hall of Fame will include a bronze bust of Memphis Minnie created just for the exhibit by Blues Foundation member and Australian sculptor Julie Edgar.
