ESP8266 ESP-Link No response on Telnet

Hi,
I have a working ESP8266 Module that I have successfully configured using Spencers guide and it is connected to my Wifi network.
However when I use PuTTY to connect to my RC2014 via Telnet it seems to connect without any errors and I can type into the PuTTY window and I see all of the chars I type immediately but I see none of the normal responses from the RC2014. I do see the the Green LED on the ESP826 module flash whenever I hit Enter on the keyboard and the Red LED flashes at a steady rate 1x sec approx (whether I am connected in PuTTY or not).
Any suggestions on debugging the above would be welcome.
