Hello,

I have started assembling the RC2014 Micro and attached a photo of what i have managed to do so far. Unfortunately i have no experience of this and find the instructions difficult to understand for what remains to be done. Specifically:

1. what if anything is meant to go into the two vertical holes to the left directly below the "FTDI Power" writing (near the R4 and R5 markings?

2. I am completely confused about the "Rom Select" soldering. Can someone explain this please?

Thank you very much
Neil

Hi Neil,

Looking good so far!

The instructions assume the standard kit which doesn't include the extra sockets and headers etc, so I can see how it could be a bit misleading.

The "FTDI Power" pins mean that the micro is powered from the 6 pin FTDI header. You would normally want to do that, unless you're plugged in to a powered backplane. The instructions say to solder a wire link (resistor leg off-cut) across those two pads so that it is always powered from the FTDI header. However, you can put a pair of header pins there and use one of the blue jumpers if you are not powering it from elsewhere. (And remove the jumper if you are powering from elsewhere)

The ROM select pins have the ability to select from any one of the 8 banks on the ROM via 3 jumpers (there are 8 combinations of  high/low on 3 rows). However, there are only 2 separate images on the ROM that you will swap between; BASIC and SCM. So you have the option of installing all three rows of header pins and using 3 jumpers to select which image to boot from, or you can use resistor leg off-cuts to short the top two rows, and then just use 3 header pins and 1 jumper to select which image to use.

Take a look at the photos on z80kits and hopefully that will help too.

Spencer
