Windows:
As far as Terminal software goes I've always used Putty. It's simple and quick.

For Linux SSH in resent months I started using MobaXterm because of it's nice layout and multi-window features.

Switched back to Putty for the RC2014 just because of the XMODEM integration. MobaXterm has build-in "ZMODEM" but I haven't gotten XMODEM to work using it.

Linux:
In Linux I typically use Terminator because of the multi-window features.

I also really like Yakuake for the drop down menu feature.

Sorry I don't use Mac so I can't give a good example.

Some of you have posted that you are using TeraTerm and SecureCRT. Just curious why and what features you look for and or must have.

While looking for something fun and that had an old school flashy look to it I found these. Didn't see much for windows.

So what's your favorite and why?

I use Teraterm and ExtraPuTTY in Windows. I used to use Coolterm and iTerm when I was using OS X. For Linux I use Minicom, because that's the only one I know how to use

I first tried to use Putty, as I have used this to SSH into Linux boxes for years now, but couldn't get it to work. The same Windows setup still worked with my Linux box and Raspi's, so I don't knoiw what went wrong there.

On the recommendations of posters here, I tried TeraTerm and have stuck with it. Works fine, auto-connects, etc. No problems.

I use secureCRT at work.  It is stable and has all of the features I need, including easy access to saved profiles and multi-session. I get beta copies sent to me from VanDyke and I give them feedback. I support clients with LARGE numbers of Linux servers (  > 1,000 server farms ).  Stable ssh with decent certificate/key control and transparent tunneling.

I gave Tera Term a try this week.  To be honest, it is buggy in how it handles windows.  Frequently something is off the bottom of the view window and I can not see it unless I maximize the window a few times.  Why do I need to do it more than once?  I would use Tera Term if it was more predictable with the view window. The terminal emulation list is poor.  I am using Turbo Pascal v3 in CPM and none of the tera term emulation types match up with the list of terminals supported by TP3.  I must use SecureCRT.

Putty, I do not use it but I just noticed a new version was released last month....  time elapses... I have tried the new version.  It mostly works for me.  I can setup the screen colors and such.  Terminal emulation is weak but I might be able to create custom key bindings in CPM to use putty.

I use Windows 10 due to Microsoft Office (Outlook).  My LCD screens usually have multiple ssh windows open to Linux boxes.
If Linux had a full featured email client (it doesn't, everything I have tried is broken for multiple folder support), I would use Linux SecureCRT.

I forgot to mention before that every day at work I use Powerterm for our ancient telnet-based systems. One of those "if it ain't broke don't fix it" type scenarios. The client machines are old too - still running XP embedded *shudders*

Hi guys....

I have found a retro VT220 font that seems to give an interesting effect in secureCRT/TeraTerm/putty.  Grab the TrueTypeFont from:    http://web1.foxhollow.ca/cpm/Glass_TTY_VT220.ttf
Copy the file into  c:\windows\fonts

Go into your terminal program and select the new font.
I set the background to:   blue=0, red=0, green=11
I set the font normal color to: blue=0, red=0, green=175
bold to:  blue=0, red=0, green=222

It gives a very retro look !

ps:  putty seems to clear the screen during boot-up and certain other operations.  rc2014/cpm seems to be sending codes that putty likes.

Awesome, going to give that font a try.
Might take a closer look at SecureCRT as well.

Aye, that was my reaction too. Can't justify it when all I'd use it for is serial access and light SSH work

YA, the price is putting me off.
BUT. am I wrong or does it cost just for updates? re-download it every few months LOL

re: SecureCRT

When you install it, it asks for keys. No key=time demo mode.  At end of trial period, it no longer starts.  Uninstall/re-install did not help when I tried it.  It must put some sort of marker on the system.  If work did not buy keys, I would be using putty or something else.

I use Tera Term most of the time, but occasionally I use Putty or SecureCRT. I like Tera Term because I can add a 50ms delay at the end of each line (when sending characters to the RC2014).

I just use picoterm I made a quick script, I can't remember if there is a default config somewhere...
cat term.sh

#!/bin/bash
picocom
/dev/ttyUSB0 -b 115200 -f h --omap bsdel,delbs

I was using minicom but for some strange reason it can take a while to start up or close down...

It's sending it's log files to GCHQ / NSA.

They'd just get frustrated reading my logs. "Barry, check this out. This idiot has no idea how to use PIP"

For me it's mostly minicom (used to use picocom but xmodem stuff was easier under minicom), under xfce-terminal or
when I want a full screen terminal https://github.com/Swordfish90/cool-retro-term. I've got a profile that just gives some delay and burn
that makes it feel far closer to the dumb terminal I owned some years ago (sadly don't remember it's brand but it was west german or at least the warnings etc on the back was in german).
