Apologies for monopolizing the interwebs.
The last thing the postman brought in this past week was the Real Retro UART Board.
This is a simple board that uses the tried and true AY-3-1015 and 6402 devices of the 1970s and early 1980s. No programming is needed to configure these boards and character send/receive is as simply as it comes.
This was the UART of choice way back when, when more complex devices were too expensive and to complicated for sending bits over the wire.
I've tested this with an RCA/Harris 6402 from Jameco and will check out the TR series devices from WD.
The board will not work with the similar AY-5-1013 because of the need for a 12V power line.
