Hello,

I'm working on trying to get my serial terminal to work.  At first I could briefly see it boot and then only go to a black screen with a _ at the top left of it.  Resetting the computer wouldn't change that display at all.  I found mention here previously of someone using these files:  https://github.com/fbergama/pigfx/tree/RC2014/bin  So I tried them.  That has the unit "booting" now, but every keyboard I've tried doesn't work.  "No keyboard found" is what's always displayed on the initial screen.  I've tried a dell, microsoft, inland, inland wireless, logitec, as well as some no name keyboard.  I've tried a micro usb to hub adapter to these keyboards.  As well as a micro usb cable to a female to female usb plug.  Nothing seems to work at all.  I know the computer is working as I can hit the reset button on the computer and I get the prompt of what to boot to.  The zero is a wireless model if that makes any difference.  I also tried the card outside of the computer powered up from a USB supply and while it would boot, it still suffers from no keyboard found.  Is there something I'm missing?

Thanks,
Andrew

Hi Andrew,

The firmware that the Pi Zero Serial Terminal ships with is for the standard 1.3 version of the Pi Zero (non-wireless), so that will explain why you didn't see anything initially, but using the different firmware worked.

You've mentioned different types of USB adapters, but there's no mention of a USB OTG adapter. The OTG (On-The-Go) turns the Pi Zero from a USB Device to a USB Host.  I think that's the missing part of the puzzle, and should get most, if not all, of your keyboards working with it.

Let us know how you get on

Spencer

Issue resolved.  I repartitioned the SD card into a small 250mb partition for the PiGFX files and it sees the keyboard fine now.

Some additional testing.  I swapped it with another pi zero.  Same results of no keyboard found.  So I pulled the latest img files from https://github.com/fbergama/pigfx/tree/master/bin and tried those.  Same result.  So I was thinking surely this means there's a hardware issue with the keyboard/cables/exc.  For the heck of it, I loaded Raspberry PI OS on the SD card.  Well, the keyboard works just fine that way from this zero.  Even added a mouse and it worked.
