The Importance of Being SRK

With a cliche'd topic like this, I am here to shower fulsome praise on SRK, the king of

Bollywood. Never imagined, I would do that, because if ever there was a surviving critic, read

scold, on this earth, it was yours truly. So, how this sudden change of heart where I have grown

an avid fan of his, no matter if it does or does not matter to others.

If CDI and OSO had their part in it, then it is absolutely true. But my catharsis happened due to

my changed opinion about him, his movies and Bollywood in general, in the last few months. I

always believed Bollywood is a poor example of cinema making, with mushy, cheesy, overdone

(add epithets as many you can) thrown in plenty, and the blame largely rested on the shoulders

of the big-guns in the vanguard. For many, it is still true and I can't argue with them, as the

reasons supporting it are many and undeniable. But what if it is its strength? And luckily, I found

out it indeed is. What I found schmaltzy was endearing to others, both in India and abroad.

The very vivacity of Indian colour, clothes and culture had got lost on me, mainly due to its

suffuse on me all my lifetime. The charm of Indian cinema is back though, and with even bigger

concomitant dream.

Where does this leave Shahrukh in the entire chiaroscuro? Undoubtedly he remains the prime

colour of it all, and for many, he is synonymous with Bollywood. The charisma, confidence and

disarming influence of screen presence has won him over zillions of fans worldwide. It never

happened that I didn't enjoy an SRK film, but it didn't fulfill me. It didn't fulfill me, because I

wasn't ready to be. The moment I changed my exalted attitude, I could laugh on corny

dialogues, romanticize with his heroine and weep with him at the cruelty of the world.  It was

awesome.

So, for his detractors, let's savour what he has given to us, and not what he could have. For

sure, we need the other type of intellectual cinema too, but leave Shahrukh for what he does

best. Yarning dreams...........

What you have stated proves two points:

1) You have become an NRI.

2) Now we know from close quarters why SRK is so popular outside India (amogst NRIs, i.e.)

 

Well, I dare not say I understood each word of what you have written, but I got the hang of it :D.

I have always maintained that as an actor I like Aamir more but I have always enjoyed SRK's movies more than anybody else's. If you would have asked me the reason, I would not have been able to put it in words, but now I know why - because I laugh at his corny dialogues, romantisize his heroines, smile when he smiles and cry when he does. Well, there lies the answer. When you get awestruck by the acting prowess of someone like Aamir, you get involved in a SRK movie.

 

So probably Aamir the better actor, but SRK, the superstar (because people like him so much).

 

Note: I am not a SRK detractor nor advertise for Aamir.

couldn't resist from commenting on this one ..... so here it goes .... ( note : jitna bujhaya usi hisab se likh rahe hain, koi matlab nahin bujhaye to bujho apne mane kuch likh diye) ......

Prabhakar bhai ,, first thing - I couldn't understand whom u r calling detractors of SRK in ur sublime article ..... is it us who use to take aamir's side during our never ending debate .... if yes, then i would say we never disliked SRK and never can for simply the reason that he has the charisma which is unmatched in bollywood.....

i agree to everything whatever u have said (the distinctive recognition and market for bollywood outside india which SRK has created) but i feel this was always there , we always liked SRK for what he has done and he does ,,, our tussle was just for fun and i think it will remain as such for there is always two sides of a coin .....  

infact i was more than impressed with SRKs effort in swades and chak de ,,, both were an outstanding performance by our SRK ...  but this guy knows that such films doesn't always work and he is always hungry for commercial success ,, this may be a reason why we don't see the other SRK so often....

but if u take aamir he has got the guts to try the other type of intellectual cinema and at the same time make it a commercial success ..... his films left u inspired , for instance take RDB .... leave RDB , take JJWS .... even now whenever it crosses  my mind it leaves a certain feeling of inspiration and confidence ... honestly i can't remember any of SRK's film like this .... though in my own admission swades and chak de were gr8 films but couldn't inspire me ....

probably this is the reason why the tussle will remain, and the debate will go on .... because definitely we all have two minds (we all in RC) as far as bollywood is concerned , one of the audience and one of the critic .....

benchod bahut hua bhasan , ab aur kuch likhe to sala bhojan nahin hajam hoga ....

and chandan , i completly agree with ur thoughts that he sounds like a NRI .... and also that "Aamir the better actor, but SRK, the superstar (because people like him so much)."

finally ,,,, for agru ,,,, salman ki to maa ki ....

Nice to see ur comments.

Well, about ur first point, not true entirely. In fact, I have become obsessed with India even more that I want to see it everywhere. So, even a small mention of it on the roads, TV etc. excites me. And as you all must have felt, India has definitely arrived.

 

About SRK n others, it is just a change of attitude partly through my eyes n through the people whom I have interacted.

 

Also, about acting, I think there is a scope for both.Look at TZP, I think I haven't seen such glowing reviews from all quarters as this movie is receiving. Looking forward to it, asa I reach home.

haan frankly speaking, i din't direct my bakwaas to anyone. It was just a babble coming out due to the compulsion of passing time creatively. If ever it was written for anybody, it has to be me :)

 

I agree with ur comparison of Aamir n SRK. Aamir remains my fav. till date but I changed some of my atti. towards SRK. So, shared with u guys which might shape others' feelings too.

waise it has been gud trip...mauka mile to sabkoi ek baar pondicherry jarrur aao...aur mere rehte mein aao...me can be deported from chennai any day from now.....lastly lady luck seems to be smiling....dunno for how long.
