Here's a question for you:

If you could buy a Chinese-made 2.4GHz receiver that was fully
compatible with your brand-name (JR/Spektrum, Futaba, Airtronics/
Sanwa, etc) radio but for just a third or half the price, would you?

For instance, if you fly Futaba and someone offered a reliable, hi-
performance 8-channel FASST receiver for just US$30-$40 (versus US$140
for Futaba's 8-channel receiver), would you choose to buy the
"compatible" unit or would you stay brand-loyal despite having to
spend two or three times as much?

That is a no brainer. I think that is most peoples biggest gripe about the name branded rx's.

Of course I would. $30- $40 is a small risk to take. If it turns out
that the clone unit works just fine then I would stick with Asian
clones. At least with my less costly models. I bought into a FAAST
system initially and only until after the fact I realized that the
receivers are way to expensive and there really aren't a lot of
options in receiver sizes for the smaller parkflyers. It is an
awesome system. But I cant see any sense in purchasing a receiver
that costs more then the whole model.

I agree, yes more or less a no brainer, BUT don't forget that the
Chinese are developing their own totally scratch built systems based
on more modern chipsets than DSM 2 and Futaba.
It won't be long before the Chinese built units are BETTER than
systems now designed in the 'early era of RC 2.4Ghz radio'.

Then the real price war starts IMHO, and I think the first real shots
are being loaded into the Chinese RC canons right about now...

IF I owned any brand-name 2.4 gear, I wouldn't hesitate to use chinese
made aftermarket receivers. As it is, I only own Chinese modular gear
in brand name transmitters, so the question doesn't apply. I do have
several aftermarket 35MHz receivers which have worked as well as the
Futaba/Hitec ones, if not better in some cases.
A friend is swapping his Spektrum modules for FrSky as the Spektrum tx
modules seem unreliable.

I use both - a Spektrum DX7 for my bigger helis and planes and also a
Turnigy 9X/Imax 9x with 8 channel corona V2 2.4GHz modules (3
receiver). I like the fact that i don´t need to take special care to
my transmitter when i fly (scratches, etc) and i also carry it with me
in my car together with the small 250 size heli nearly all time - if
it gets broken or stolen..... well, who cares for the around 100
USD ;-) - compared to a more then 3 times expensive Spektrum
equipment it does the same (plus 1 additional channel :-D)

Just my 2 cents....

i sure would, -but then again i have not got the problem yet. -still
very happy with flying on 35Mhz, and everbody leaving the band for
2,4Ghz.

Yes, i would use a compatible Chinese receiver, brand loyalty in my
view is becoming a thing of the past.
People just cant afford to keep shelling out hundreds of pounds on
branded equipment that when a chinese version is a third of the price,
i for one would soon put the saved money toward another model.
I have converted one of my JR TX's over to corona 2.4 using the DIY
kit and im very pleased with it.
Kind regards.

I see that you haven't mentioned FlyDream DIY modules as a
possibility.

The new V3 DIY module is very easy to install and brings with it all
the good features of FlyDream plug in modules, without the need to cut
open the plug in module and really "hack" the system to install. And
they are affordable.

You can find out more at http://www.fly-rc.com.au/ if you are
interested.

Just a thought.

Probably not mentioned as they're not compatible with either Futaba
FHSS or Spektrum DSM/DSM2 systems and the question referred to
possible clone receivers developed to work with these systems. I
think we are all aware of the Tx/Rx sets from Assan, Corona, WiFly and
my personal favorite FrSky amongst others, but none of them are
compatible with the big boys dedicated 2.4 transmitters.

Absolutely I would, I currently have a JR 9 ch 2.4 system, 9ch rxs are
c£100 UK which is obscene. The last 8 ch 35Meg rx I bought was a hitec
DC unit and it was £25

That's the heart of the story. The 2.4Ghz systems costs £75 more, but
does it give you £75 more value than your 35Mhz DC. I think we all say
NO !
Time they stopped milking us, time we voted for change with our
wallets.

PS. I think I just did that. I bought FrSky.
