Summer 2025 Photo Thread

Spring has sprang away, time for a summer edition!  Just so happened I got out for a very enriching ride in the forest (okay, a decent amount of walking too) and have a fresh photo to start off the thread. It isn't very summery, in fact it was cool and rainy in the morning but we managed to stay pretty dry. These forests pretty much look the same year-round, and I'm not complaining. As you can see we found some pretty old trees, too!

Gus on the shores of the Salish Sea. The more I ride this bike the more I like it! I get a kick out the reactions it generates on group rides. Mountain bikers don’t think it’s mountain bike-y enough, gravelistas don’t think it’s gravel-y enough, but for the type of mixed terrain I like to ride it’s extremely capable.

Nice to see the "NO E-bikes, NO Pedal Assist" on the Sleepy Gap trail sign. As mtn. biker and avid hiker, having motorized bikes on the same trail is the last thing I want to encounter. Maybe that will catch on here in the west!

I managed to get out early today before the heat worked its way into the high 80s.

The big guy behind the gate was quick to let me know that I was not welcome in his sheep pasture. I didn't argue with him. 

The highlight of the ride was in the woods where the early morning low temps were still lingering. By 1130 AM I was drenched in sweat and called it quits.  Nothing epic but it felt good to be out there.    Steve in AVL

I feel like my post is practically a fraternal twin to Brent's in that I also took my green Riv up to the Gunks with the same gold Fabio's Chest mounted to the front. This was my Platty's first trip out of the city and it was amazing. I will also attest to the fact that the carriage roads (I did a combo of Mohonk and Minnewaska) make for incredible riding. I can't recall smiling so much during any ride I've taken in recent memory. I took the Hudson Line up to Poughkeepsie and biked over to the preserve via the Hudson Valley Rail Trail. I would highly recommend this day trip to any NYC-based Riv owners. 

The bike handled beautifully on the carriage roads and I really appreciated the front grip area on the Billie Bars during some of the 10+% climbs.

Those are great trails in New Paltz. I've knocked out a 60-miler there from time to time on a Jones LWB. Spectacular, but best done during the week to avoid the crowds.

June has been a good month, 17 rides so far and I'm hoping another 3 to probably get me to my highest riding month in a long time.

I struggle to take an interesting 'summer' photo.  Spring = bloom/flowers, Fall = changing leaves, pumpkins, Winter = snow, ice and everything nice!  The one below is from a ride this week before work where I left my house just after 6am to avoid the heat.  I drank both bottles in a ride of around 1:20.  It was hot and humid, but the air flow was refreshing.  So was the A/C in my house when I got back.  I should have taken a photo of my C17 saddle, where you can clearly see my sit bone sweat marks!

This week has been contemplative and a confirmation of a couple things:

- shortly after taking this photo I stopped to take another photo of a nice garden maintained by the city, with the low sun casting its warm glow.  I contemplate getting more into cycling photography and even checked out cameras this weekend.  Well, after I propped the bike up beside a rock, stepped back to take the photo, it tipped over, landing on the rock and giving the first scratches on the frame since owning the bike almost 18 months ago.  I should just ride!  I don't have unlimited time.  I prefer to take in what I see with my eyes and observation.  I actually see more this way, than stopping to take a photo.  The act of taking the photo is often disruptive for me.  But I like nice photos.  It's decided though, just ride, snap the occasional photo with my phone when all is right

- on Saturday I went for a long ride, early in the morning again, and stopped at a gas station to refill my bottles.  Shortly after stopping a couple pulls up on their bikes.  They were young, very buff, and upon a quick glance had some $$$ bikes.  The guy was telling his friend about turning down a clothing sponsor deal from a bike clothing company because he couldn't bother with instagram.  She was showing him a video of a Visma rider with a ventilator, that she was going to buy for herself to improve her Vo2 max.  I didn't mind, whatever keeps them happy!  Maybe they're trying to sign pro contracts, who knows.  I snapped a photo of his bike as I sensed it was high end and wanted to look it up after.  It was the Wilier Triestina Astana bike, with Enve 4.5 wheels.  I looked it up online, seems to be around Cad$16-19k plus the wheels were over $4k.  Again, good for them.  But god I love my Roadini.  Regardless of performance, aero, weight, it is a very fair price for a comfortable, well-made bike that can last ages.  It's classy.  Timeless.  This experience confirmed just how much I love this bike.

Great to see all the photo contributions!  Brent - sweet Atlantis even as a starting build, and I feel the same way regarding preferred existence.  Bill - that's really interesting how all the trees are leaning to the right, wonder what that's about? 

The first few days of astronomical summer has continued to be cool and cloudy for the most part here, and I'm really happy about it as someone who doesn't care for summer in the first place. Enjoying the progression of later-blooming flowers and whatnot. Here is a photo from the small orchard I often stop for a beer at on the commute home.

A friend and I planned a warm weather three day summer tour in Eastern Oregon along the Old West Scenic Bikeway. Luckily we had gear for the rain and hail that we experienced at the start of the trip! The Bleroit performed beautifully given that I had to add more gear than originally planned for.

5+ years ago I would have rode my hardtail mtb with some semi-cycling specific apparel on a ride like this through Sycamore Canyon between Malibu/Ventura counties just outside of Los Angeles. Granted, I would have also been able to explore some more technical singletrack, but that wasn't the point of this ride. Picture was after a 40-min ride into a nice desolate valley for a picnic and idle reading with my partner, the technical mountain biker in me couldn't resist railing these berms as fast as possible with my sandals, corduroy shorts that are normally worn in my house, and my lifeguard straw hat. The confusion I brought to others on their electric mountain bikes was pure joy.

This is going to become a running joke where my photos looks exactly the same in each season. This was from a 60km mostly off-pavement ride on Sunday. The drop bar configuration of the Bombadil has been working really well for me, since my 'sporty' rides tend to end up on trails for at least part of the route. I do wish it were a couple notches lighter, but the geometry and tire clearance are spot on, so overall no complaints. Nice to be confident I won't break it, too.

We took a short trip from Indy to South Haven, MI last week, and I rode the Kal-Haven trail.  A crushed gravel rail trail from Kalamazoo to South Haven. 70mi of mostly flat wooded/country miles. Recommend, but maybe not when it's >90 degrees out.

Here's shots of the Clem, the first one taken last week. I ride it every day I have off work, usually 12-15 miles. Noteworthy is that it's sporting a new 1x10 drivetrain and new wheels. The handlebars are VO Granola bars, I think. I've enjoyed them but as they say, there's a new sheriff in town.

The new sheriff: VO Curvy Bars (again, I think). They are a bit of a game changer. They are wider with less sweep and they put me in a more mountain bikey position. It's easier to stand and just feeels more sporty all the way around. I also rmoved the front rack and basket, moving them to the back. This, with the wider bars, really ahs calmed the Clems steering, which I alsways felt was something like a beagle on a leash, especially at low speeds.

The reason I say "I think" on the bars is becauae I bought both at my LBS and I don't recall looking hard at the label, mainly just the price and the shape. In both cases it was a matter of, "these look like they'll do". But they have the VO logo on them and the shapes look like they match the product descriptions.

And shortly afetr taking this picture (yesterday, the 4th) I got drenched in a summer thnderstorm. It was actually kinda fun. The hail was bouncing off the pavement and pinging into my forks.

I rode the Atlantis out to the Carhartt mansion ruins on the trails near the Catawba river here in SC. Thanks to a tropical storm off to the east the weather here was tolerable. My lugged Susie handles these trails well , but I was a little nervous with the Atlantis as I hiked a lot of sections. We’ll get there.

That Atlantis looks like it's ready for a world tour....I do like that Middleburn crankset that others on the list have mentioned from time to time...kind of an hourglass shape. Sweet!

Another early start to avoid the heat.  It was pretty nice the whole time though.  I planned a route based on mixed surface, with more dirt than gravel.  As an aside, anyone notice how much more comfortable dirt is under your wheels than gravel?  I have a lot of gravel paths in town, and the Roadini w/43mm is not very comfy (manageable for sure), so I already use the Fargo w/2.2" tires  One town over, their trails are mainly dirt, and they're a lot of fun.  I road up to them, hit them all in one direction, and then over to the lake in the photo for a snack break.  I fished in that lake a week ago with my daughter's boyfriend (that's a new thing for me!  hanging with the BF when she's at the Coldplay concert lol).  Reversed direction and hit the same trails again.  I was really wanting more of that but I couldn't think of any other dirt cuts.

I love how the sunlight reflects off the rims.  You can see from the still flags, almost no wind.  I usually dislike wind, but on a hot day I don't mind it as much.

It's winter here in Adelaide but I'll post anyway. Took my Appaloosa up my favourite local singletrack/trail, the Pioneer Women's Trail. It's a lovely, scenic way to climb into the hills and get to the vicinity of Mt Lofty, which you can see in the background with the three towers.

I realised that I hadn't climbed this trail for quite some time as the last time I rode up here I nearly fell off the side of the trail. The trail is just on the limit of comfortable challenge for me: rocky but not too rocky, steep but not too steep. The Appaloosa goes just fine.

Anyway, I always seem to stop here for a photo and my bike always seems to fall over while I take the photo.

I had been focusing on nature in my photos, but here is what summer in the city looks like - plenty of beach-goers, mostly in the distance, and the pool was looking very attractive. It was pretty hot yesterday (over 30C, so about 90F), hotter than I like to ride in, but I made my way over to the beach as well as to watch a downtown criterium race. About 26km round trip. This week is gonna be hot, so my riding is going to be slim to none.

Yeah, that's why I put "Northern Hemisphere" in the subject when I started some of these threads. Took my stoker out on our new to us Bilenky Viewpoint. We rode to the San Francisco Bay Bridge and back. A distance of 28.6 miles total. Long slog out on the Bay Bridge, fighting a fierce headwind. Made for a quick trip back though. We were cited by the FAA for not filing a flight plan (JK). Made some serious speed. Passed a guy on an MCRB like he was standing still. The stoker really digs the ability to coast while I pedal. Photo below of us at the turnaround on the Bay Bridge.

I’m envious about all the water that others get to ride around. The Rio Grande has dried up completely along its CABQ channel, which it is doing more often nowadays when in earlier decades this was very rare. I almost stopped to take another “river done dried up” photo on my ride just now. We’ve had little snowpack in the mountains this year and despite a few widely-spaced and relatively voluminous rainfalls,* the monsoon season has been a poor one. Still, we’ve still got August and Sept to look forward to. It is cloudy today and there were rumbles and spits indicating, just possibly, some actual rainfall, so I carried my rain cape and Grunden’s hat on my 19 m fixed gear errand detour, just in case. 

*The local weather channels record rainfalls as little as 0.01”. 0.05” can be spun as a “storm” if it comes down heavily enough. I think we got as much as 0.1” or even 0.25” during last week's rainfall.

Free tidbit: the acequia trails pack down nice and hard after even light rains, and it is very nice to ride on hardpack instead of sand. This lasts a few days depending on temp and humidity.

One more: when the sun goes behind the clouds, the air temp can drop by the equivalent of 10*F. The temp at my door 072925 at  2:19 pm MDST was 78* versus upper 90s a few days ago.

Lastly: durn Texans make us give them some of our RG water, per the multistate and very complex water compact to which NM is a signatory, so we can’t fill up the reservoirs with excess flow during ample times to release in times like now. The poor Mexicans haven’t got anything for the last few years, IIRC. This multistate compact is entirely different from the ancient acequia legislation inherited from the Spanish who got the model from the Moors.

Actually, it must have rained upstream a bit yesterday or the day before because small channels were once again open, at least near the Montano Blvd bridge. As usual, no photo.

Patrick “too busy pushing (slowly*) the 76” fixed gear on the 1999 Joe Starck to take a photo” Moore, after a very nice out (south) and back (north) ride just now along the Paseo del Bosque path from Montano Blvd to Rio Bravo Blvd and back.

* I expect that before too long I’ll have to bow to age and (1) raise my bar by 2-3 cm to about saddle height (but with a, say, 10 cm instead of 8 cm stem); and (2) gear down to a ~72” / 65” Dingle gear combo instead of the current 76/68” that has served me so well for so many years (50 t ring instead of 52 for the 17/19 Dingle and 24 12” wheel). Still, I was in the hooks for at least 17 miles of the total 21+ thanks to an annoying sidewind.

Speaking of bar at saddle level: I undertake (God willing) the longest ride I’ve done for decades, on Saturday, with a couple of other riders: the 50 mile bike route that the City has stitched together, in places half-assedly, from existing but unconnected bike routes. I don’t have a derailleur road bike — ‘nother bike purchase to ponder — so will ride the “road bike for dirt” that has the Maes Parallel about 5 cm below saddle but on a 10cm —or did I change it back to 9 cm? stem, using the Soma Supple Vitesse wheelset. I can do 30 miles on the Riv, but I felt it would be tempting fate and chiropractor bills to try 50 on it, all question of gearing aside (I do have 2 2-speed fixed hub rear wheels for the Riv).
