It's spring and in Minnesota, that means rain and on occasion; snow. For years ridden with the supplied Brooks saddle rain cover but have never used it, thankfully. It doesn't look like it would do much in a downpour, however given the tight fit on my B72s (3  of 'em)). Has anybody used one of these: http://www.rivbike.com/product-p/s92.htm? Thoughts?

Seems like good insurance because it covers the underside. I have SKS Longboard fenders and maybe this'd be overkill but in a typical downpour, I think every element helps.

Cheers, Shifty

Uhhh, that's B17, not B72.

A few minutes into the return trip from Riv Rally East in the nor'easter that descended as soon as we got our bikes back on the racks Sunday afternoon, I put a Brooks cover on a green B-17 that's on my son's Quickbeam, and a Randi Jo B-17 cover on my SimpleOne's B-67 Select.  Through almost 4 hours of very heavy rain with the bikes on the back of the car, and despite the fact that the Randi Jo was the wrong size, it did a very good job of keeping the B-67 very nearly completely dry, top and underside.  The Brooks cover, not so much.

I have never actually ridden with the Randi Jo cover on a saddle, but it looks very secure and comfortable -- unlikely to bunch up.  They're expensive, but at least for moisture protection, pretty impressive.

I use the Aardvark that riv sells on my B-17 and B-68. Keeps the saddle dry and fits either saddle snug enough to comfortably ride. The only thing I don't like is that it soaks up water and stays wet for a while after it stops raining. And also you can't wipe it dry. I'm curious about the randi-Jo one but it hasn't built to $30 curious. --Smitty

I live in the Pacific Northwest and just use a saddle cover and
fenders. Heavy sweat will wreck a saddle in the summer too.......

I also live in the PNW and ride in the rain all the time (it's that or
not ride much). My secret...fenders, sit down, pedal..the butt seems
to cover the whole saddle. When you stop and get coffee pull out the
plastic bag.

I use fenders, wrap the saddle in a plastic grocery bag then put a saddle cover over top.  The bag wears out every 6mo-1yr.  Works great.  I ride in all weather, but always park inside.

Citybikes in Portland has been carrying some neat saddle covers made
locally, sold under the name Chicken Scraps.
They run around $30 and they seem pretty tough. I'm still using the
old Carradice cover that has been patched and seam-sealeda couple of
times (I don't want to toss it!), and with a plastic bag underneath
there are no problems.

Great suggestions, everyone. I'm getting a Randi Jo based on Pudge's comments but also because I like to support fellow sole-proprietor's, see his website: http://www.randijofab.com. The B17 on my fenderless mountain bike will benefit the most but also my Hisen during Minnesota deluges, typical on any given day.

Keep the rubber side down! Sean (Shifty)

After trying a lot of different methods of waterproofing leather saddles, I finally found a method that's absolutely, 100% effective. And the best part is, it simultaneously completely eliminates squeaking, and further saddle maintenance. You simply remove the leather saddle, and replace it with a plastic one. Voila!
