I was looking over at the Bruce Gordon site, and saws that he has Rock 'n Road tires back in stock. 700c, 43mm wide, 540 grams, $100/pair. No association, I just like seeing clean and simple knobby tires available for 700c rims, especially when they're made by Panaracer.

They do look like a nice all rounder tire but I wonder how durable the
sidewalls are?

In the past I never had a sidewall problem with the Original Rock 'n Road Tires that were made in Taiwan by Cheng Shin.
The New Tires are made in Japan by Panaracer.
Panaracer Japan makes only the Highest Quality Tires - I do not have any worries about the quality.
I have only had samples so far from Japan - but the first shipment is currently on the water, and will arrive in Oakland around June 12th.
They Panaracer version is about 100 grams lighter than the Original 24 year old version.

Super-excited for these tires.  The originals had a great combination of roll-speed and grip, and I suspect these will be even better due to the nicer casing.

I agree. Not many like these for 700s. I just grabbed a couple. (Do wish they came in all black casing, however.)

Not sure if all were aware that BG added clearance diagrams for the
new tires to his blog post. Sadness is finding that nope, they won't
fit a Legolas...

Pleased to say that the new Rock 'n Roads fit a QuickBeam with adequate clearance at the chainstays. BG is correct when they say the tires are 43mm wide. I have about 1.5 mm clearance on each side, but that will grow when I add two links to the chain, so the widest part of the tire moves back and gets centered in the "pocket" of the chainstay. Still, it might be too tight for some folks, and I have yet to see if they rub when taking hard corners.

They also add 6mm of radius... these are big 'uns!

Andrew, a post without a pictures is like a kiss without a mustache (bars)!
:-)
This makes me want a Quickbeam (or Bombadill, or Hunqa) even harder.
I picked-up 4 tires at Bruce yesterday.
They will go for now on my Ventana.
Bruce is an amazing guy! We had a lovely hour chatting with him.

Cheers

Here are some pictures, mounted to the Velocity Dyad rims on my QuickBeam.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/71141757@N02/sets/72157630487687298/

And - surprise - they're wider than I first thought. Bruce Gordon Cycles says they're 43mm, but my calipers show them as 45.3mm wide at widest point (which is across the shoulder of knobs). The tires ride just fine, and have room for good fender clearance, but they're too close to my chainstays, not enough room for a quarter to slip past.

So, I have decided to put them up for sale. $80 delivered, in same box as shipped to me by BG. The tires have been ridden - literally - around the block on smooth pavement. I can take cash or a check, no paypal. Or RBW credits, if that sorta thing can happen.

Thanks for the pictures of the BG knobbly tires in the Quickbeam stays. I was considering them for my green QB.
I think they'd still work with a little scissor work on the rear tire, snipping off the side knobs.

Hey there Andrew -

And another thanks from me - I've been reading Mike-out-at-Black
Mountain Cycles posts regarding larger knobbier knibblies. He spoke
well of the BG tires.

http://www.blackmtncycles.com/2012/07/been-long-time.html

It did seem that in one of the early photos -
http://www.flickr.com/photos/71141757@N02/7531761196

you had more than a quarter's width at the chainstays. Is that
correct, or just an artifact of the image?

No doubt - these are good tires, I wish I had more clearance. In that shot, look at the top, and you'll see the chain links, for perspective. There's just not enough room for a quarter to slip past the chainstays, at least not on my 66cm QuickBeam.

The BG site says they're 43 mm wide, the informative sheet that ships with the tires says they're 44mm wide, and my own measurements (across widest points) showed 45.3 mm. I guess different rims might change the profile, I have Velocity Dyads and I measured the tires with approx 70 psi inflation.

BTW, I have a buyer for the tires.

70 psi seems like a lot for a 40+ mm tire. Might they be skinnier at
say half that?
I have some quasi-motos, and if I pump them way up they seem to grow a
fair bit.

Hi All,

I was the lucky buyer of Andrews Rock and Road tires (thanks Andrew!).
I was hoping to use these on my Hunqapilar, and now I'm
reconsidering. Not because I lack clearance for these, but I'm having
the opposite problem. That is, I've become accustomed to the 50mm
Schwalbe Duremes which are just a bit wider than these. I've become
such a fan of how these Duremes work on the mix of road and trail I
ride on the Hunqapilar, I'm afraid the Rock and Roads are just going
to sit unused. So, I'd like to pass these along to anyone else who
can put them to use. I only mounted one of these and did ride them at
all. Same price as the first round...$80 shipped, PayPal prefered.

Thanks
Mike

Bruce,
These were inspired by the unobtainium Hakkapeliitta (sans studs), no?
Is there ever a possibility you would consider doing a run of these in
584?
Thanks,

yes, please... Rock and Roads in 584 or 650B/27.5 what ever we are calling them these days ...  you'll sell a bunch as there is nothing with decent off road tread in this size.

Morning,
We have no plans to make other size Rock 'n Road tires at this time.
We could make 650B tires if we had about 1000 pre orders to cover the costs
- but at this time we don't have any $$$$.
We do have the 700 x 43mm folding models in stock for immediate shipping.
