From You Know Who.

On Saturday’s ~8 mile very steep, rocky, rutted, and muddy dirt ride up the side of the Sandias, Chris sat bolt upright on his Homer, powering away up the slopes and certainly leaving me behind. But this takes bar height to the “height of folly,” and you will forgive the stupid pun. As You Know Who says, “Just get a Rivendell, already."

Ah yes, the dayze of riding a frame that's too small and trying to make it work ! AHahahahahahaha !

I'm sure Chris would power up the slopes regardless of the type of bike he was riding or how he was positioned. It's not a skill or a talent, it just kinda is "one of those things" that no one can explain. The bike never makes the rider !  It's a nice sales pitch though, and the classic motto of the European pro cycling teams back in the day: "win on Sunday, sell on Monday" !

My '57 Lenton is right up there, so to speak.

I don’t think your build is out of proportion. I do think it’s at the limit for the frame size, but it’s not excessive, IMO.

Nice bike!

Thanks, it's a total cheat, with Phil custom hubs, Synergy rims, and SunTour/ TA half-step triple.
$150 frame on a $1000 wheelset.  When I found the frame, figured I could engineer a better bike for what it would cost to buy back the original parts.

A few lucky NOS ebay snags.

Tore open the original packaging on NOS Coloral bag support, and found a spear-gun tip converter that matched the lamp-boss threads.

@Ron

What is the make and model of that chain guard?

I am very intrigued.

Thank you.

Hi Kim,

That is an old Simplex chain guard, which I bought on a google group - maybe Classic Rendevous, but also might have been here or I-BoB.
(joke about this being the only reliable Simplex part)

I prefer Shimano FD over just about every other because they design chain lift into the cage,
but SunTour FD let me replace the clamp bolt with a computer board stand-off, and gave me a boss to mount the Simplex chain guard.
I bought a range of stand-off heights, and dialed in the one that gave the best freedom on derailleur body travel.

Hi Ron,

I thank you very much for all of your information and pictures of this remarkable and beautiful vintage Simplex chainguard. It is a work of art unlike others I have seen in the past.

Keep smiling and ride when you can.

Kim Hetzel.

I too run my quill pretty high. Long legs and a short torso means Rivendell was really a godsend for comfortable bike riding long term. This is on a 60cm SH.
