Memorial rides this Saturday

Anyone here in this group planning on attending one of the many nationwide memorial / unity rides (in response to the murder of fellow cyclist Alex Pretti) this weekend?

I plan on attending the Tampa one, in case there's anyone else here in the bay area who might be going as well.

Meet up at Liberty Park at noon and roll out at 12:30 -- Family friendly, chill pace, bike path/bike lanes, ride 1-2 hours maximum, ride up to the Capitol to double dip at the @saveourgreatsaltlake rally and/or peel off whenever you want.

The Boulder CO ride was maybe 700 strong? Never have so many Boulder cyclists ridden so slowly! At least four Rivs. In addition to my AR, I saw an Appaloosa, a Sam, and a Cheviot. Someone admired my Sackville bag and said they'd seen another on the ride, and on a Riv; that would be a fifth but I did not see it.

Maybe 200 in Phoenix, OR about halfway between Ashland and downtown Medford. Met a lovely chap who I had been messaging with who recently relocated to town (he let me ride his Platy for a bit), and made a new friend who came up from Mt. Shasta. Shed a few tears. It was a beautiful day.

There were 300-350 in Salt Lake City. I talked to someone who came up from Provo with his Appaloosa. There was a lovely Charlie Gallop out there too. Bikes and people of all kinds. We were enough to block off all 4 lanes of northbound traffic on 300W, a big north-south thoroughfare, and got mostly supportive honks from drivers. A wonderful afternoon.

I haven't seen an estimated headcount in Oakland, but at the start point at Rockridge BART, I'm guessing it was a minimum of 500 riders, and I suspect a lot more.

As far as the ride itself went, I would have preferred if it were less Bike Party, and more Ride of Silence. Apparently, East Bay Bike Party was one of the main facilitating organizations, so their crowd was inclined to treat it as yet another BP-style event. IMHO, a ride commemorating the government's killing of two civilians does not require a funky playlist, or "woo HOO!"s from the riders; it shouldn't be regarded as yet another opportunity for fun. But I was not in charge, and I wouldn't expect many would have complied with my "This Is Serious Business" instructions, had anyone given them.

The Tampa ride was pretty cool, even though the weather was terrible (for Florida), and we had about 45-50 riders. The ride organizer gave a really nice talk at the beginning; recognizing all the reasons we were there. There was also a representative from a local immigrant support group who spoke, and a city councilperson who is heavily involved in the bike community spoke about the situation on the ground with ICE in Tampa. The most striking moment happened right before the ride, when a retired career military and West Point grad got up and spoke about how the overwhelming majority of his fellow service members are absolutely against what is going on in this country. It was moving, and hopeful. That got everyone fired up for the start of the ride.

Hello Fellow Colorado Rivs

Anyone interested in putting together a Colorado Meetup for Rivs, or if one already is Established?

I am up in Loveland/Fort Collins area, maybe put something together more central depending where most people are located?

Also Looking to put together an ATB Bike Meetup (90s mtb, surly/ all-city, crust, riv like-minded people?)

Just throwing it out there to see if anyone is interested in doing something like this.

I got out for the memorial ride put on by the non-profit coop Boise Bicycle Project. I looked out for Aaron on their Clem, but no dice - way too many people!

I was totally blown away by the number of riders as I turned on to Lusk Street, home to BBP - Estimated headcount was 650!!! The BBP director kicked off the memorial with an awesome speech focused on the importance of community, engagement, and standing up (and riding) together in solidarity in the wake of murder and cruel treatment of our neighbors by ICE.

While the tone had been set and everyone was well aware we were riding in memorial, it was hard for riders not to be stoked and made a bit giddy by the moment and spectacle.

Ride on!
