Hey all,

I’m looking for bar suggestions for my Gus. Hoping to tap into the collective wisdom of this list.

The tricky thing is that I’d like to keep that stem in the pic, because it’s awesome, so the bar has to have a either a 25.4 or 26 mm, and a 100mm clamp area similar to the Bosco bar in the pic above (even tho the caliper was set to freedom units for the pic). The Bosco bars are nice, but I’d like to use this bike for bikepacking and light MTB trails and would prefer something a bit wider with less sweep/rise.

I know the Ortho bar would work, given it's long clamp area, but I have them on two bikes already, and they have more backsweep than I’d prefer. Do you know of or have positive experience with a mountain touring type bar with the desired specs above? If so, I’d love to hear from you.

Blacksheep bikes makes something called the Mountain Moustache.   You need to pay attention to stem height at the MM has about 50mm of rise.

Josh, I fully understand your affinity for the V stem. I set up my Gus similarly. Same stem with the 580 wide aluminum Bosco. I loved it but felt it was not up to my singletrack riding. I changed to a Hope Cyclery Albacore handlebar. Unfortunately (I thought) this necessitated changing the stem due to much less backsweep. The Albacore is 785 wide with roughly 50 degree sweep. It has some rise (20mm?) and a nice forward sweep before sweeping back. It’s a 22.2 bar - no enlarged clamp area. The perfect stem for this is a Paul Boxcar 7/8” (22.5) x 35mm. This change has resulted in a totally different bike. Perfect for my bikepacking adventures & really superb on singletrack. The V stem could have worked with shims, but it was just too long. I sold it for what I paid for it. By the way, on singletrack the Bosco did slip even with the V stem. My current setup does not budge. Not the answer you are looking for but thought I’d share.

Guys, thanks for the recommendations. I appreciate it. Buying and swapping a bunch of bars & stems can get pretty expensive and time-consuming.

Vic, the MM looks nice. It's $, but that's ok if it's "the solution". Do you know the clamp diameter by chance?

Richard, Thanks for the rec and the pics of that killer bike of yours. Something like the albacore might fit the bill, but there are plenty of options if I swap stems. In fact, loads of options at 31.8 & 35mm, but I'd like to keep that stem on there if I can. It feeds that '90s MTB vibe for me. I will keep this in mind, but welcome other options and experiences.

I don't ride a Gus but used the heat treated 580mm bosco with the v-stem.  For a more aggressive and less upright position, I switched to a 660mm heat treated Wavie bar (has the same clamp sleeve as Bosco).  Works very well for me.  Below is a collage from some old pics.  Top photo is the Bosco and the bottom is the Wavie.  This should give you an idea of the Wavie's sweep and width:

Wavie is a good idea. Does anyone have experience with the wider version (75 cm)?

I have the 660 wavie and the sleeve measures 100mm long. If you look at the Riv website pictures, the 750 is bulged, not sleeved, and tapers down well under 100mm.

That's how it looks to me, too. Bummer, because Ray's setup looks nice.

I've got wide shoulders, so I'm sure I'd feel more comfortable with a wider bar. I used to run the Tumbleweed 800mm persuader bar, on a different bike and liked the width and sweep. 800mm is wider than I need, but I'm comfortable with wide bars.

Thanks. If need be, I'll have to ditch the v-stem and go with something else.
