if anyone's interested in seeing some Rivendell influences on a non-Rivendell frame, here you go:

First ride will be tomorrow. I'll probably reply off-list on that one, unless those ratchet friction thumbshifters just blow me away. Ratchet friction thumbshifters on the 9-speed drivetrain offroad might be worth reporting on.

Jim:

The handlebars look short; optical illusion? What are the shifters?

The bars are early 90's narrow, MB-2-ish. I think it's still what I'm used to.

The shifters are the main reason the post was on-topic:

I have high hopes for the ratchet.

I have old SunTour ratchet thumbies on my XO-3. Like buttah, mate. You'll love 'em.

Hey everyone, sorry, bad timing, just found out about the internet blackout right after posting Flickr photos here, and I decided to participate, so please accept my apologies for posting a Flickr link that is not accessible at this moment. Please do not respond to this message onlist; I don't intend to generate any discussion of SOPA. I just wanted to apologize for my earlier post and for accidentally setting up a "Kobayashi Maru."

Hmmmmm, look just like the IRD Power Rachet shifters.
http://www.interlocracing.com/shifters.html Rivendell calls them
"Silver on Soma. I wonder what the genesis of this "project" was.
Regardless, I love the idea of these shifters. The XT top mount
shifters on my MB-1 were my all time favs. IRD makes a 9 speed indexed
version too.

My old mid-90's Hybrid will be in transition for the next year or so
as I build retro-fit it with better components. I bought some of the
inexpensive $15 thumb shifters as a trial run to see if 1) I like
friction shifting, 2) I like thumb shifters. So far I've really
liked them! The ratcheting makes all the difference in the world over
my horrible memories of friction shifting dept. store ten-speeds as a
kid.

Once I've got a new drivetrain on the bike I plan to upgrade to the
Shimano bar-ends or maybe the shifters James is using here.
