Hi everyone — Last fall Pam Murray sent me some Silver shifter levers that were in need of repair. They came off her high-mileage Betty Foy after the springs wore out.

Thanks to Mike Godwin for sending me a broken pair of the old Suntour Sprint levers, they provided the parts I needed to get Pam's shifters back up and running.

I made a video about the process, it's up here: https://youtu.be/0g67pjAPYZk

I hope this is helpful to anyone looking to get their worn out or broken Silver v1 or v2 shifters back into shape.

Cheers!

This was good to watch — generous of you to share with the community, Eric.
Now referencing "turducken" in a Riv-aligned video was probably a first....and somehow very fitting...
Thanks again

Jim

Great video Eric! Now I'm looking forward to my silver shifters breaking down so I can tinker like a pro.

Also, I dig the wooden-handled screwdrivers and your prowess with the technical language: 'Some other sort of dealy'. Ha! Well done!

Cheers, John

Thanks for that Eric, I really appreciate when things are opened and demystified. Suntour's pawled/friction shifter guts have been diagrammed but watching them be opened, disassembled and serviced/reassembled is very rewarding.

Really brings out the non-artist, inquisitive amateur mechanic in me, like Daniel Rebour's illustrations do.

Lovely video, Eric. Your shop gives me those Van Neistat vibes. Thanks for documenting this and sharing your process.

I'm beyond amazed how great this group is to come together to fix my broken shifters.  Thank you to Eric for taking them apart and to Mike Godwin for the guts.  I love to repair things and get full utility out of all components.  What a great video.

Thank you Eric for sharing! All good advice. Nothing worse than a small part falling on the shop floor and spending untold time groping around looking for it.

You are so good to your RivSisters, Eric. Thank you for fixing those shifters for our Pam and for making a documentary so others can repair theirs, too. You may have just outed yourself to some of us less-than-mechanical types. If you start receiving packages of broken stuff in the mail, well, you’ll know how that happened.

I hope I get to meet you next weekend!

Thanks everyone for checking out the project and for the kind feedback.

Leah, let me know if you ever need a hand with something that can easily be mailed out to me in Virginia :0)  I should be around mid-day on Saturday for PBE

Hey Eric,

Is there any merit to lightly lubricating any part of the ratchet shifters for smoother action? Or would this defeat the friction effect?

Cheers, John

I think a little light lube would help slow corrosion rather than improve ratchet action. In the past I've put a little lube on a rag and rubbed the spring, pawl and ratchet washer. Can't remember if I used T9 or Tri-Flow

Thanks Eric. Perhaps I'll use the T9 I have.

Cheers.
