How to sign up to the Blug so that I can make comments directly? I
click on "register" and it cycles and cycles and cycles and, frankly,
I am not sure exactly what this "Tumbkr" thing is that I am
(apparently) registering for. I promise not to be verbose and to be
reasonable. While I certainly don't agree with all that Grant says or
espouses, I do like his writing and respect his convictions -- or
rather, I respect his willingness to have definite opinions on things
and find his opinions interesting even if I personally don't find them
suitable.

Tumblr seems like a bizarre platform for the blug. It's not very comment/discussion-friendly, and it is, shall we say, "youthful" in its demographic appeal. By youthful, I mean its dominated by teenagers and college students "reblogging" about teen celebrity idols, instagram photos of fashionable clothing, porn, and marijuana. There's a string vibe of young people trying to "hook up". Riv seems pretty out of place on tumblr, IMO.

Anybody can get a tumblr account and "follow" Riv (similar to "friending" in Facebook). Often you need a separate disqus account to leave comments, depending on how the blug is configured. With the standard tumblr comment function (which may be turned off), users could comment, but Riv can't respond in the comments directly, but can address the comment in a separate post. The Riv blog follows a more "traditional" blog format, rather than that of a teenager blogging and reblogging snippets 20 times a day. Again, it's odd to me that a company like Riv, following an older style format and presumably catering to non-teenagers, would choose tumblr when Blogger or Wordpress or whatever would seem to be a much better fit.

I think the kids call it a microblogging site - it can be used to
aggregate "found" web content and generally has pretty direct controls
of who says what within your stream, without making you maintain a
separate site. It was paid-ad-free, though they've recently announced
a deal (or two) to move towards that model.

But, specific to your question:

- Go to Tumblr.com and register (sign up) for an account.
- View the Rivbike.com blug while logged in.
- You do need a reasonably compliant browser for all the little web
doohickeys to work reliably, but should have the options to comment,
reblog (have it appear in your feed on tumblr).

You can set it up so that tumblr automatically republishes stuff from
other sites (such as flickr) to your stream. You can make it as
complex or simple as you wish.

hope that helps!~

I agree with Jim Thill. I don't much care for Tumblr for Riv purposes and think Wordpress, Blogspot, or similar platform makes more sense for this type of content and Grant's approach to "blugging".

Especially irksome is that when subscribing to the feed via Google Reader, the Blug posts are truncated to the first few words, which requires that you go visit Tumblr's domain outside of your news reader environment. I understand the commercial reason for this, in that it effectively takes you to a landing page where you can easily access rivbike.com to go shopping. But it does add an unnecessary step as far as efficient reading of the blug goes.
