I imagine cycling helped Jimmy Carter live to be 100! Did the secret service follow him on bikes also?

This has been a topic on the paceline forum and apparently the Rivendells are still at the Carters' home in Plains, GA.  They should put them on display somewhere like in his museum or even the Smithsonian with some pictures to show that some Presidents do ride bikes:

Good Luck!

Paul, asked if the secret service followed the Carters on their bikes. In my experience, yes. When I was working I bike commuted most days on the Freedom Parkway path that runs right by the Carter Center. Approximately 20 years ago I was riding from work and the Carters were riding on the path near the Center. I was approaching them but with their helmets on it was hard to distinguish them at first. What startled me was the black Suburban trailing them. Cars aren't allowed on the path so that was odd. As I closed on the Carters and the SUV I realized it was indeed the President and Mrs. Carter.

If I came upon the SUV from behind couild I have passed it? I'm guessing no. Only lucky once. Never had the experience again.

Rich in ATL

Thanks Rich for sharing!  Were they riding the Rivendells or another bike?

Best,
Toshi

If you're subscribed to the news letter you may have read Grant's latest BLAHG where he shared more pictures of the Carters with their bikes as well as Rosalynn's hand-written and Jimmy's typed (and sincere) thank-you letters.

Typo, oops.

I know politics are off-limits but, damn, I love presidents who ride bikes—especially Rivendell presidents.

Thanks for the sweet memories, Rich!

Not a Prez, and not a Riv, but when I lived in Ottawa I used to see our PM's Mom on her bike. And one time, while she was also singing...

Toshi, unfortunately this was before I knew about Rivendell so I don't know what they were riding. I needed to move over to the grass to get out of the way!

Jock, not at all political. An extraordinary couple from Plains, GA out for a late afternoon bike ride:-)))

Best,
Rich in cold, snow covered ATL

This is comment on the picture

I think it's a great photo:  Jimmy looks genuinely happy with the bike, like a kid with a new toy.   His wife seems bored or maybe 'well it's Jimmy's idea'.  Maybe she's just tried of the photos.   Glad to hear Rich's comment about them riding together.
