If you're in the neighborhood, a ride in San Clemente is taking shape. Planning for the 15th, with the 22nd as a possibility if enough schedules need it. Discussion on flickr (we really should start a google group...) here: http://www.flickr.com/groups/socal_rivendell_bicycle_appreciation_society/discuss/72157627749072438/

Great route that can add in some premier singletrack if requested. Lots of food options in town, which is really what these rides are all about.

...in terms of recreational cycling there are many riders who would probably benefit more from
improving their taste than from improving their performance.

And it looks like Joe is volunteering to do just that! So who
is planning on going? No limit on numbers of course, but you'll need
to get in contact w/ Joe for directions.

Again, this isn't crazy epic, but a ride along Pacific Ocean, then
doing some climbing up into the coastal foothills. Probably 1/2 dirt,
but on hard-pack trails. Marathons would be the perfect all around
tire for it. If there's consensus, we can ride some singletrack back
down at the end.

I'm in for sure & will take Metrolink down. Be warned: Joe has an
adventure bike with fenders, and a Rivendell, but they are not the
same bike. Life's full of surprises.

If you are coming to the ride and driving, we can meet at my home: 34662 Calle Rosita, Capistrano Beach, CA 92624

After getting ready, we'll head down to the coffee place near the train station to meet those coming in from that direction. If people would like, we can roll down a bit early to get some coffee and pastries prior to the ride.

Here's an updated map, showing the planned route from Metrolink
station: http://www.bikely.com/maps/bike-path/San-Clemente-mixed-surface

Whole lotta' climbing, but it won't be hot, and we're never more than
1/4 mile from any sort of a bail-out option. The beauty of this ride
being based in crazy-busy Orange County. It's a jewel of a route most
people don't know about!

I haven't fully convinced myself to bring knobbied, but am definitely
thinking about it. There's a lot of riding through town that knobs
wouldn't be too fun with, but then the entire other half (55% to be
precise is on dirt). Decisions, decisions...

Metrolink update: as of Monday 10/10 the Orange County / Inland
Empire Metrolink schedule changed and the first train does not arrive
at San Clemente until nearly 11AM! That punts me into the driving
mode (ugh!).

Thanks for the update, Doug. Guess we should have had this grand
adventure one week earlier... :-( Guess Joe's driveway is going to be
pretty full!

BTW, knobbies are over-rated for this ride. Don't need 'em unless you
really like riding on them. I mean really, it's a typical SoCal Riv
ride!!!

I guess all the planets are in alignment for me. I need to go buy a lottery ticket.

The new Metrolink schedule puts me in San Clemente at 915am ( was something like 730am)!

Of course I would need to ride (or drive) the 7 miles to the train station in Oceanside as I live at the southern border of Carlsbad. And coming back I'd have to wait until 6pm... no way dude!

It will be way faster to drive the 30 minutes to San Clemente RT.

I'll be on semi-bald JB's... no rock gardens please.

JB's will be fine. I need to swap out my knobbies, or put the cassette from that wheelset on my wheelset with the Pasela 35s. It's complicated being me...

Is anyone coming in by train then? If so, let us know and we'll meet you at the coffee place down near the train station.

Joe, is the phone # on your email the best to get hold of you? If we (me +2) are running late, might meet you in town.

Back-up meet up spot is by Sugar Shack on El Camino. That's basically at the base of the climb.

Is that "Sugar Shack" or "Bagel Shack"? Bagel Shack is an easy
landmark; can't recall seeing a Sugar Shack in SC (there is in HB).

Definitely a Sugar Shack: http://g.co/maps/qcvuu Taco place right next to it also. Hmmm, might just have to stay there!

Its right next to San Gabriel where we start slogging up the hill.

So we can still aim for 9:30 at the station, but have a bit more flexibility. 9:30 isn't imperative anymore as the southbound train isn't running now. I'm still waiting to hear back from one of my car-poolers, but the other has confirmed already.

David:

Thanks for once again putting together an incredible adventure in the
heart of Orange County. I had the vague notion there was something
inland of San Clemente but no idea what was there. Truly a wonderful
day, at least 50-60% (??) off pavement, plenty of climbs (and
pushing!) to burn the calories.

+55% Rivendells: 2 Atlantis; 1 Hilsen; 1 Rambollet; 1 Riv custom.
The uber under bike was a carbon Calfee that went both uphill &
downhill faster than my Atlantis and was none the worse for wear at
the end of the day (rider skill may have been a factor). There were
even some "real" MTBs; go figure.

We started at the north end of San Clemente & finished up at Pizza
Port. Someone else may have statistics about distance & elevation but
a wonderful time was had by all.

Thanks Doug! I'm so glad everyone could make it! Some premier rough-stuff riding there that I'm glad I was able to introduce more people to! The amazing thing is that at basically any point, you turn left and ride a city street back to the start.

Thanks to Joe for letting us stage out of his house, and again, thanks to everyone that came out for the day (and it was a day!).

Pix are here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/cyclotourist/sets/72157627778448779/ including proof of the Sugar Shack existence!

AGREED! I have clearance for once a month, use it or lose it! :-)

BTW, here's the updated route showing how we came back on the utility roads. 3,700 ft.of elevation ain't bad! That doesn't include the additional eight miles to/from Joe's casa!

I do think we need to go back there with proper MTBs and see what that singletrack is all about!

Slightly sore hands and a little over-all tired, but so far so good the day after!
