Sorry to be the first and 'not' have Riv content to share.  My Roadini is sheltered in my basement away from the cold and snow.  Actually, she hasn't been out in 2026.

But the Fargo was up for duty this morning (and yesterday).  It was sunny, not much wind, around -8C.  I'm planning to shorten February so it doesn't feel as long as January (what was it Leah, 456 days or something ;-)

The 'trail' I show in one of the photos is fine for 5 minutes, but it's bumpy and not very pleasant, even with a bit of suspension thanks for the Redshift stem.  The other photo is at our fairgrounds and the gravel track around the outside was nicely plowed, and the skating rink was no match for the studded tires.

I feel like the first couple photos for the monthly photo post being non-Rivs is becoming tradition. I'll uphold this farce by sharing a photo of my Twenty from this evening's ride. In my defence, it's sporting an Albatross bar and Monarch pedals; distinctly Rivvy parts. Also, it is not lost on me how lucky I am to be riding in above-freezing temperatures!!

I did this ride today thinking it was January still.  It was a low 60s kind of day in the East Bay hills but I stopped for this photo op in front of the Chancellor's Mansion on the UC Berkeley Campus, on the Legolas

Trying to clear the head after weeks of bad air quality and bad news. The air was better today, but looking out towards SF, I couldn't help but think of Neil Young

Apologies for the nearby groundhog and his prognostications, but my February is looking unusually similar to last month.

I cannot recall the last time the temperature was above freezing, and have been accepting single-digit temperatures as normal. Only the below-zero starts have warranted a bit of extra preparation. My non-Riv commuter is a mess during this brutal cold, which negates my usual pump-up yard sprayer triage cleaning option.
Feb looks like Jan.jpeg

The foot of snow has been reasonably removed from roadways,  but so many of those had that volume of snow moved into the curb parking and or bike lanes. Folks have been tolerant of me in the traffic lane, even with passing being very limited by the now frozen solid snow walls at the edges of plowing.

Andy, just looking at your snow covered Surly makes me shiver a bit. My hat's off to you for braving that stuff!

After a couple weeks with record setting low temps it finally warmed up a bit today - giving me a good chance to log a few miles on the '25 Hillborne. Most of the ride was on a paved rail trail, but included some exploration of dirt roads that intersect it (they were slushy & muddy) and a yet to be completed section of the trail still covered with the railway gravel (it was lumpy & bumpy).  I'm liking this bike.

Today a new Riv rider in town joined the monthly social ride our advocacy group hosts. We were both super excited because Rivs are quite rare still in Australia!

Their Homer was stunning and I can see why people rave about it. As chance would have it the build and fit are almost identical to my Roadini and so I can say with confidence that they ride almost identically, with the Homer just that bit smoother while still retaining the liveliness I love in the Roadini.

Also: The Appaloosa works so well loaded up with rear panniers (on an Ortlieb quick rack), it's like it was designed for it! 😜

A couple of weekends ago the ice storm had me deciding to tear down my Riv’s and swap/add parts. The next weekend we had 10 inches of snow, and while the Riv’s were still not rideable, I was able to get out on my Surly Cross Check ( my most Riv-ish non Rivendell. A good thread title.). It only took about five days for all signs of snow to be gone. So it is in South Carolina.

Fun seeing all of you in the tropics having fun on your bikes and all the places (not covered in glaciated snow heaps) you are riding.

8° this morning at 6 am.  4° at 8 pm for the return. -4° tomorrow morning. Amazing how fast things melted by sunlight and mag chloride turned into brown slush and black ice after sunset.

I still wouldn't know why I'd drive instead of ride, even in this not-approved-by-the-local-chamber-of-commerce winter scape.

If you are tuned in to the Super Bowl, you have some idea about the Bay Area weather.  Today, in addition to being Super Bowl Sunday, is also my birthday.  I've made a habit of trying to ride my age on my birthday, and I did in fact succeed in doing that.  I got a 70 miler in, just in time to get on the couch with the rest of America.  My ride started in the high 40s and finished in the low 60s.  I took a couple photos of RoadeoRosa, featuring its new treasure, a Berthoud tool roll on the front rack.  I picked that up in person at Cycles Grand Bois in Japan last fall.

That's awesome, Bill. The bike, your ride, and to the couch by kickoff.

I hope to have a good birthday ride this year, and June makes better odds. I'd have to move if my birthday were Super Bowl Sunday.

My commuter is my only ridden bike this month, and is a faint dark green under a white wash from mag chloride. I've never needed studded tires on my commuter for this long. Overnight freezing of the daytime melt may keep them necessary longer.

Tomorrow we'll get above freezing after 20 days of sustained freezing or below-zero temperatures.

Oops.  Sorry for not being clear.  It was ONLY my 57th birthday, so I was only required by the rules of the universe to ride at least 57 miles.  I went 70 as a building block towards another goal: goosing my Eddington number up to 70 by the end of 2026.  Another long-horizon goal is to keep my Eddington Number ahead of my age and to get my Eddington Number to 100 before it's all over.

Thank you all for the kind birthday wishes

Regarding my fractured leg, I'll knock wood and say that I'm fully healed, but the associated loss of fitness is still a pretty major deficit.  Getting a 70 miler in was a significant effort, and so I've still got a long way to go to be where I was on the day of my injury.

Towards that, I've kicked off a new program.  On the day I broke my leg, I was doing my half-marathon on a 24 week training schedule that targeted my first ever marathon.  My leg break obviously scuttled that plan.  If I target that same trail half-marathon event (The Cinderella in Oakland) on May 30, 2026, then I need to slot into my 24-week training schedule right now.  I'm going to give it a shot.

Slotting myself between the sunny and warm days of CA and the wintry scenes from the entire NE region, here is true PNW winter - one photo from each of the past three days: rain, to sun, to rain. No complaints, though!  Hard to tell from the photos but it's three different bikes, too: a Hillborne under that poncho, the Crust Evasion on the bluff, and the Bombadil at the pond.

I've been riding the Platypus all winter here in Northeast Ohio. Borrowed the car to commute on a few days when temperatures were -20°C and lower with wind chill.

The region finally saw temps above freezing today; after running my errands I gave the bike a quick spray down with my little pump sprayer and then propped it up in the yard for a snow-to shoot.

Kai, it’s so reassuring to see someone else putting a Riv to good use in sloppy winter conditions.

There’s just something about the Roscoe Bubbe mixtes that just look sooooo good to me, yours is no exception. I like the attachment for the rear dyno light, do you also use that as a small saddlebag support?

Thanks Morgan, life’s too short to ride a bike I don’t love, and all my bikes qualify as beaters, as they get beaten. I do what I can to keep them running relatively smoothly, but washing is a rarity. Do any metallurgists know if oxidization makes frames lighter over time? Maybe we can claim we’re shaving grams.
As for that little rackette, it has no other job besides holding the light. Internal wiring for 2.5” is for comedy, and one side’s silver brazed, the other bronze. Mark B suggested making a lot of racks before attempting a frame, I’m heeding that advice. Here’s a couple closeups - https://photos.app.goo.gl/f3VuZgEGgdMuzagXA
And a photo from today. Another premium parking spot so’s to watch my kiddo and his band perform Smells Like Teen Spirit in his school talent show (he’s Dave Grohl)

This shot is meaningful because of the salt on my parking spot. We got above 32° for the first time in 18 days. My usual parking place is the only one baptized with such a baptism.
20 days below freezing.jpeg
I celebrated by using my pump-up sprayer to rinse away most of the melter accumulation and stain. A thorough drivetrain cleaning will be in order; Phil Tenacious had been my sloppy situation lube, but it congealed in the single digits and had to be cut with ProLink Gold. Not a test, just a deep winter necessity.

March Madness may be coming, but I'd suggest that the true madness ends when I get to take off the studded tires after their longest stretch of use yet.

Hats off to all the real winter riders out there.  I did finally dug out my basement to liberate my bikes.  Took the rivendell around the block a few times just to see if the new rear wheel I had built exploded (first build in 10+ yrs) and rode the singlespeed to the grocery store.  Snow is compacted enough in places now to perhaps do some trail riding.

Finally, back to back outdoor rides.  Temps around 0 celsius.  I should be able to ride tomorrow as well (Family day here...I'll ride before family day festivities).

Yesterday I rode from my house through town, 25km.  It snowed a bit on Friday night so yesterday morning was wet, plus the salt that was on the roads made for a giant mess.  As soon as I got home I took out the garden sprayer and gave it a cleaning, followed up by lube, etc. (that whole process felt longer than the ride lol).

This morning I put the bike in the car and drove 15 minutes north to a parking lot that is close to gravel roads.  The gravel roads in that area are snow covered but well compressed (they plough; do no salt, just some sand).  I got in another 25km ride but this time almost entirely on nicely snow covered roads.  Bike was very clean when I got home...though at times I didn't know I would get home.  On an east-west road I came up over a steep hill to hear barking on my right.  I looked over, had a flashback of last time I was on this road that huge white dog chasing me.  The white dog was on leash this time so I talked nice to him/her and continued pedalling.  Thirty seconds later I hear barking to my left and see three black dogs (back drop against white of the snow, quite dramatic) running out to the road.  I pedalled my butt off and they were right beside me, barking, for what felt like forever.  My heart was probably in the area of 180-200 bpm.  A few minutes later I look to my right and I'm like, okay, dragons have returned to Westeros, can this get any worse!  Fortunately, no white walkers were spotted (but I'm sure they were watching me).

Here I am in front of a shed at home, with the Bomba.

Who knew that drop bars and 38mm tries could so transform a bike I lost interest in riding to one that I love to ride. I'd rather not have the fenders on the Bomba today but because of all the snow melting right now and residue from ice melting stuff on the road, I gave in 'tll the roads are clean.

Wearing my favorite pants of all time, the Ex Offico Amphi. For riding, walking, lounging, every day, all day. Pleats for thigh freedom, high waist front and rear with a differential cut higher rise in the rear. Tapering legs with buttons sewn into the cuffs to trim the cuffs. The best ever !!!  You'd also never know I was wearing a Sportful winter road jacket, the best jacket I ever purchased. Wears like a fitted jersey, but is fleece lined with ventilation panels and a caped vent in back. A soft-shell windproof Gore Infinium and a perfect balance between wind blocking and vapor permeability. Dead quiet in the wind.

A lovely spring day, close enough ! Low 50's and a light breeze. I think this my 7th ride outdoors this new year. No particular scenic view as there's one everywhere

That's a good eye George ! I'm Ohio, and near the river, but outside of Steubenville, in the far mid-eastern section. Around here is an eclectic mix of Ohio, West Virginia and Pittsburgh Yinzer accents since the 3 regions are within minutes of each other. I've heard the sin-sin-at-ahh though, moreso on baesball radio broadcasts. I never heard Oh-hi-ahh though, but have heard Oh-hi-oh or I'll say Oh (pause) Hi - Yo ! just to be goofy.

I refreshed my Hillborne with a new bar and crankset. Here are the before and after pictures, one week apart. In the first picture, I was loaded up for a S24HO campout. With the new setup, the Hillborne feels a lot more playful and capable off road, which I think suits this bike better. While it's fun to to change things up every once in awhile, I'd like to keep these bars on the Hillborne and get a dedicated drop bar bike going forward.

Thankfully the temperatures have been warmer the last 10 days, I've been out 5 times; February is turning out a lot better than January.

This morning was perfect for a winter ride with studded tires.  Yesterday I got out on gravel tires and the pavement was just damp.  1cm of snow overnight made for a very peaceful ride.  I was up around 5am, put the wheels with studded tires on the Fargo, loosened up while enjoy tea and got out there just as the sky was brightening. Almost no wind, no cars, and the bit of snow adds to the ride as it's different and a fun experience.

Hello Randy,

I recently purchased the KT bar for my Platy and it's really comfortable. They're hard to find and kinda pricey, but if interested, you can get them here: https://www.magiccomponents.work/product-page/nitto-x-crumbworks-kt-bar.

Thanks,

Hello Bill,
Thank you for the link-I may try these or the upcoming new Rivendell handlebar.

Garth, your choice of attire for riding — very classy! The "roady" Bomba with 38mm tires looking good too.

Hey Steve, what is the substance you are biking on? Is that an ice rind on top of a limestone trail?

Best Wishes,
Patrick

Patrick, that picture - a few posts back - is a crushed stone roadbed (most likely granite) covered with a layer of slush and slowly flowing water working its way downhill. Remnants of melting snow line the roadside. I abandoned the climb shortly after taking that picture. I'll get back to it on a dryer day.
