I am still getting my Clem L finished (it was 'found' stock which I now understand was not in inventory originally because it had issues which weren't tracked so I received a bike with build issues). I didn't like the shifter arrangement so I purchased Microshift thumbshifters. When I put new shifters on my Cheviot, I don't recall which ones I purchased, but I do know they were easy to reverse on the holders. This doesn't seem possible with the Mircroshift shifters.

I am looking for corroboration that they cannot be reversed (the internal stack) on the holders. As it stands, they are on the outside of the handlebars. Then, assuming I am correct, I am looking for recommendations on other shifters that will work (i.e. Silver, Sunrace, Dia Compe).

Thank you!

Hi Kiley,
Check out this old thread for some pertinent information:

You swap 'em without cables installed: left goes on right, right goes on left. Then you put the cables on and run them in friction.

Once it's done it will seem simple but I can verify the brain takes a minute to grasp the idea.

Hi Kiley. I'm running 9sp Microshift thumbies reversed and it works really well. As Joe says, you install (without cabling) the original left/FD shifter on the right side under the bar, and original right/RD shifter on the left. I'm not sure what you mean by easy to reverse on the holders or cannot be reversed on the holders. For the Microshifts, it should be a simple matter of switching them around and mounting under/inside the bar!

Thank you. The only issue is I kinda like indexing shifters...

Thank you. Unfortunately, I like indexing. What I meant by reversing them is that the shifter could be removed from the holder and easily re-attached to the opposite side holder so the originally R shifter is now on the L holder which is on the Right side of the handlebar. I found a photo showing one on my Cheviot. The shifter did have a black sleeve that I removed. IMG_0680.jpeg

Hi Kiley,

Your photo shows a Left-sided shifter on a Left-sided mount clamped to the right side of the bar. If it was a Right-sided mount the cable would be exiting towards you. If it was a Right-sided shifter the direction of cable pull would not match the cable stop on the mount.

I've attached photos of a Left-sided mount and Right-sided shifter. You can see that the mount matches the orientation you have pictured but the shifter doesn't. A left-sided shifter on a Left-sided mount matches your photo's orientation.

Best,
-Dave

Oh, golly! Thank you. I have outbound hemispheric reversal (a fancy way of saying I see the correct orientation bit it gets turned around on the way out) so I frequently have things backwards. This was very helpful.

Ahh apologies, I see what you're saying now. I never actually removed the shifters from the clamps so can't speak to that. I just reversed the entire shifter assemblies around.
