I just picked up a Saluki and it has this odd thing attached to the frame. I have no idea what it is? Some sort of device to hold the chain for some reason? Anyone see anything like this before?

I believe it's a fancy way of holding the chain for when removing the wheel. Never seen one like it though.

I did! I got it late yesterday so didn't get a chance to ride it but I am super excited. I have been without a Rivendell for a few years. My first Rivendell was a 53cm Bleriot so this should be very similar.

It's a chain rest. I've had chain rests, though much simpler in design, added to my customs, though much higher on the stay because the frames are designed for single cogs. Very helpful when removing the wheel on sandy verges.

I have a 55 Bleriot that I bought because the 56 Saluki was too large. Enjoy.

I don't have a drivetrain that is even remotely as clean as that one.
I recently bought two chain rests from Columbine Cycles (Riv used to sell them). http://www.columbinecycle.com/store-accessory.php

Although you really should shift into the small cog before trying to rest that chain (as I was reminded this afternoon when I did a quixotic wheel swap to avoid having a blowout on my rear tire on a trip to downtown Oakland to pay my water bill). If the chain isn't lined up with the inside of the seat stay, said chain may pop right back off.

Shout out to John at Columbine. Late May I ordered two chain hangars. When the hangars didn't show after two weeks or so I e-mailed Columbine. Apparently my order went into a spam folder. Just received not two but three hangars. Riv style customer service:-)

Best,

The chain hanger on my 1938 Bates is a nail head. The chain hanger on my 1965 HR Morris is a nail head. The chain hanger on my 1970 Jack Taylor is a nail head. Maybe there's an English tradition in there somewhere.
