Blue Lug had these interesting ideas for chainstay and kickstand protection using Newbaum's.  Not having used Newbaum's before, wondering of you who have can confirm if there's enough sticky to keep this kind of protection in place?  I like the simple look of it.

Newbaum's is plenty sticky. Stickiest tape I've ever seen. But you still will need to twine the ends or put something on the ends to hold them down so they do not unwind.

I feel like it would stay put pretty well if the ends are twined as in the photos. The only issue I foresee are the edges; the adhesive doesn't go completely from edge to edge, it stops a few millimeters before.

It will stay in place untill it doesn’t, which will depend on how often it’s rubbed, scrubbed, wet, mudded, mucked, etc. I attempted Newbaum’s on a rear rack to stop a saddlebag buckle click, including wrapping with twine. Between my poor skill and high (a)beausage and weather it began coming off after a week. That was with it wrapped, not just laid on linearly.

With abandon,
Patrick

I should add that the chainstay wrap Rivendell did (twine on both ends, shellaced, but never re-shellaced) on my Hunqapillar lasted 5+ years and would have kept going except I turned it into the Hunqabeam. Grin.

With abandon,

I've found when you're twineing to bare metal the strength of hold is much less, but with a layer of tape the twine has something to bite.

The bare metal wrap lasted a couple of weeks at best. The taped n twined way has proven tough.

The twine is really nice! I used electric tape the color of Newbaums instead of twine and it’s lasting into year 3. It is now much faded from this photo of initial build.

Thanks all - I will give it a whirl.  It's not that expensive, either...
