Is the Roadeo gone?

I was looking for the Roadeo on the Riv site, and couldn't find it. I am thinking of going to a Compass tubeless tire in a 700x35 size and was wondering if it would fit my 59cm Roadeo.

I'm sure you still can, it's just not going to be promoted anymore because the price and wait got too close to "shoot, I might as well buy a custom." I predicted a good while ago that we would end up here, the production MUSA frames just weren't making sense anymore.

Do you think the problem with MUSA frames is just the cost or the ability of Waterford to produce lugged frames.   It could be a combination, high cost, low demand, less vendor interest to commit resources.

My 59 cm Roadeo fit an actual 38 mm tire with minimal (~2 mm) clearance (chainstay pictured below).  A 700 x 35 will fit yours with safer clearances.

John, I would guess it might have to do with costs and supply. I think true temper moving out of bicycle business might've put a hiccup for them. Boulder bicycles also halted their Waterford-built Boulder bikes program.

Don, not the tire you want Pasela 35s definitely fit. A tad more clearance than the 38s shown on Tim’s Roadeo.

Yep I love Compass tires.  The pictured tires (Challenge Gravel Grinders) were really just for a fit test; the clearance was a little too tight for comfort.  I rode 700 x 32 Compass tires on my Roadeo most of the time, and sold them with the frame.  I could have fit fenders above the 32s if desired, but I tried to keep my Roadeo stripped-down.  Turns out, I just don't ride skinny tires any more, so I couldn't justify owning an incredible frame for them.  Moved on to a very happy list member in Singapore.

I currently have 700 x 38 Barlow Pass tires on my plastic (CF) gravel bike, recently swapped from 700 x 38 Steilacooms.  And my Riv Road Standard has 650 x 42 and 38 (front/rear) Compass tires.

I haven't set any of them up tubeless yet, but I intend to.

IME, which is considerable, even Compass extra light Elk Passes (175 grams for a 26 X 29 mm tire) shrug off goatheads with tubes containing Orange Seal. You might not need to convert to tubeless with 35 mm tires.

IME again, tubeless is better for flats only with fat tires requiring less than 30 psi -- the low pressures don't seem to force the sealant through the holes in the tubes; while OS and Stan's work in tubeless tires down to mid-teen psi's.

Allright. Here's what I am going to try. I am going to have Steve Rex ( actually Doug, his AAA mechanic ) buy some Compass 700x35 extra lights and have Doug install them on my Williams' tubeless-ready wheelset. Down the road I will buy a compressor ( just a tank) so I can get the beads set. My go-to bikes are a Roadeo and a Steve Rex and both are set up to handle 700x35 tires. Can't wait to try tubeless. And, thanks for all the advise.

From what I understand, Waterford no longer has True Temper tubing. I still see builders builiding with it (Chris Kelly, for instance) but I assume this is old stock they have.

As an aside, didn't Boulder Bike stop taking orders because of Waterford supply issues?

It says 5-8 months, the last I heard was 9. Which explains why Riv/Grant has virtually given up the Waterford frames business: There's just too much money and time required of a buyer who might as well make the 'full custom Rivendell' leap at that point. They're getting perfectly good bikes from Taiwan you can ride home right now for reasonable money.

This may be like the Toyo made Rambouillet and Saluki that were to "take a nap" from which the never woke, or it may be a hiatus until suitable domestic sources are worked out. With Roadini coming from Taiwan, no need for Roadeo to also.

I imagine you could essentially order a Rambouillet or Rodeo as a custom and get it fit to you.

Their lug work is cleaner than their TIG welding (NB I have owned two lugged Waterfords (a 2200 and a 2800) and three TIG Boulder Bicycles (an RS and two ARs)). Marc's son is really, really good with silver. I probably should have gotten my prototype Road Sport done with lugs.

Bottom line, I screwed up selling my 60cm Ram, and I will not make the same mistake with my 59cm Roadeo. The Roadeo is a fairly expensive non-custom frameset, but it's a great design and the build quality and paint is impeccable. And the geo is perfect for someone that just plain enjoys riding his or her bike.
