Hi friends,

We have been lured from Michigan to Columbus, Ohio. I will hang back a year until we graduate our junior. I am so sad to leave Michigan, but am  always excited for new adventures, and especially of the biking kind. I am hoping some of you are in that area and maybe we can meet for some rides.

Leah, congrats on a new chapter! Although the riding in Michigan is superb from what I have heard, I think you will be pleasantly surprised by what you'll find in Ohio. From my experience, I've yet to find a state with a better network of bike and recreational trails. They really did it right and took advantage of the opportunities for rail trails and connecting metro parks.

While I am in central Kentucky, I do a lot of riding in southwestern Ohio, from Cincinnati up towards Dayton and Yellow Springs by way of the Little Miami Scenic Trail (a Rails to Trails Hall of Fame trail). My buddy Huston (a longtime member here) and myself are just starting to plan for a Riv meetup along the Little Miami at some point this year. I'll be sure to keep everyone posted, as I'm sure it could prove a convenient, central location for many others here. Despite you still being in MI for a while longer, perhaps you'd consider making the trip to get a taste of some of the trails OH has to offer?

Brian, I would love to come to that ride! My schedule is pretty open so please let me know. I had not heard about much outside of OTET in Ohio so this news cheers me greatly.

When I get to Columbus, at the top of my wishlist is a biking best friend (or 3). I have had so much maturation in my bike life in Michigan but one thing I lacked was a kindred spirit to adventure with. I’d love to cultivate friendships that would yield partners to bike tour with. I got started with my college boy but he is graduating early and leaving for parts unknown. I am in want of new riding partners!

Thanks for all this uplifting news!
Leah

Also the opportunity to ride in the two-day, 200 mile TOSRV (Tour of the Scioto River Valley) in May from Columbus to the Ohio River and back.  And, yes, since it's a two day event there's the opportunity for bikepacking.

WHAT?! I must sign up for this IMMEDIATELY, whether I’m still in Michigan or not!

Hi Leah,

I'll start off with a couple of negatives: I'm yet another guy (strike 1) and I'm currently, er, between Rivs (strike 2). But I have lived in central Ohio since 1995 (man, where did the time go?), so I'll give you my $0.02.

I'll plug my area: Dublin is a great place to bike. It's an affluent suburb NW of Columbus. It has more than 150 miles of multi use paths and bikeways, and they actually connect places. For instance, we now live in Jerome Village, a sprawling development just to the northwest of Dublin, and I can ride from our house and be downtown to the library and shopping in a pleasant nine miles. And since this is Ohio, the bike paths aren't very heavily travelled for the most part, so it's not like you're on a congested freeway dodging speeding e-bikers.

The Bridge Park area in downtown Dublin is also an interesting new development: they've made a mixed use urban center in the middle of a suburb, and it really works. Shopping, dining, activities, housing, businesses, riverfront, all in a short stretch. And I can bike to it easily.

To get a little feel for Dublin, I'll toot my own horn and suggest you visit my blog, which I started when the kids were small and I decided to take them to every park in the city (56 at that point!) by bike:

Spoiler: we mostly succeeded. Dublin even gave us T-shirts afterwards.

There's also some decent county roads north of us, but I mostly stick to town these days. I feel like too much of a target on a two lane road. But there are group rides that leave from Glacier Ridge metro park and head that way. Maybe a women's ride, I'm not sure. I think these are run by Columbus Outdoor Pursuits.

Otherwise around Columbus, Clintonville is a great neighborhood that has a nice bike connection to campus and downtown, but that trail is heavily used, and not all that great to ride on. I'm guessing you may also look at Upper Arlington or New Albany (no biking feedback here, but I don't like them because they always beat my daughter's team in sports) or Lewis Center/Powell, which I would avoid due to heavy sprawl.

Feel free to pm me if you any more specific questions.

Eric
