Hello, looking to add a Wald basket for my AR.  Anyone have any good suggestions?  I am more of a slow rider that likes toting six packs and baguettes than goo kind of guy.
Cheers

My AR has a NItto Mini Campee 32F and a Wald medium basket, and I highly recommend it.  I also get tons of use from the medium Sackville shop sack that Rivendell sells, which is sized just right for a medium Wald.

+1 on everything Matt says above. Cargo nets are great too. Happy hunting!

Keep in mind that the mini front racks Riv sells have very limited capacities. The 32f, for example, is rated to 4.4 lbs. If that's enough for you, definitely snag one! I have a 32f and like it, although I'm thinking of trading it for a demi-porteur style rack to be able to carry a bit more weight.

On my Cheviot, I have a medium Wald with a cargo net on my mark's rack (with platrack attachment). At some point I will go up to the huge size because I like to have the capacity to carry more.

The Nitto M12 should bolt right up to your cantilever posts (and it comes with the required double-ended brake bolts).  It's also the cheapest Nitto mini front rack, available for less than $80 new.

It works great as a platform for a medium Wald, like any Nitto mini front rack.  It also seems (my opinion) stronger than the mini front racks like the M1 or M18 which have adjustable hardware and diving board crown mounts.

Mark's rack, medium Wald basket and a Sackville bar tube sack works nicely for me. Don't forget a net to cover the basket!

Richard

I have a Nitto M18 and medium Wald basket on my Chevoit. The M18 is supposedly rated for 14 pounds.

The SOMA Lucas Mini Alloy front rack is really amazing & only 36 bucks! It's super light, Mounts as easy as any I've tried, looks great, is a great base for attaching a basket and despite the mini in the name is not really that small. I have this rack on 3 different bikes, I am a big fan of it & my local Riv dealer sells as many as they can get their hands on!

Just want to thank all of you.  This is rad information.  I am definitely interested in the Soma the heavier carrying capacity, but all ideas have been really helpful.  Cheers

Nitto Big Front with Wald basket + Large Shopsack + Sackville backabike Panniers is the ultimate, IMO

I like my Blackburn outpost front rack with a lrg Wald basket and an oversized, tangled cargo net. It's OK for oversized pizzas and light stuff up top, but it might not be optimal to sit things that high like a month's worth of dog food or a 250 ft roll of 12 gauge Romex. Geometry is always a factor, you know.

The rawland racks are finally available if you like black.  The Demiporteur rack is close to the size of a medium wald basket if you want a more robust basket rack.  It also has the tombstone for a traditional handlebar bag.

I find it kind of hard to believe that the 32F is only safe for 4.4 lbs and the M18 safe for ~14+?  If those are the advertised figures, either the 4.4lbs is extremely conservative for the 32F or else the 14 lbs. for the M18 is fairly optimistic.  The 32F has chromoly brazed-on outer struts and a one-piece chromo strut that goes through the fork crown while the M18 uses aluminum bolt-on struts and a two-piece flat tang held to the fork crown by a brake bolt.

I agree with you, Matt. To me, it is obvious and self evident, by inspection that the 32F is way stronger than the M18. The Published numbers are what they are. I take responsibility for myself and I make my own decisions. I do run the 32F and I would not run the M18, because of my own certainty that the 32F is far sturdier. Every adult should make their own decisions, of course. To me, the Marks Rack is obviously stronger than the M18 because you can triangulate it with double struts.

The m18 gets bendy with loads of 4-5lbs, in my experience. I like a mark's rack, and have one on my main bike, but these days I put a long strut down to the drop out. Even then, there is noticeable sway. The whole diving board attachment point seems to need a redesign.

I liked the vo constructeur rack (and shouldn't have sold it). It doesn't do much more than a mini rack, but felt a lot sturdier without being too much more invasive or heavy.

I had an M18 on my Rambouillet with pclamps and a Docena Demi-Porteur bag and after one too many overstuffed grocery stops I decided that I needed a different rack.
I acquired a Nitto 27F and I love it thinking about getting some braze-ons put on to get rid of the clamps.

I have not loaded it up with front panniers so I don't know how it will ride but I have not had any complaints loading up my Docena and the rack doesn't wobble like the M18 did.

Here's another one to consider: a new mass production variation on the Cyclefab/Haulin' Colin front rack: the SOMA demi-porteur: http://www.somafab.com/archives/product/demi-porteur-rack. I have one: it's aluminium, but nicely made. No light mount, but (in my opinion) there are lots of ways around that. Claims to support 10kg. Ideal size for a basket.

I think I'd prefer a bolt tab on the strut as opposed to a nice looking weld. It is a good looking rack, tho, and I'm going to Pedel Revolution to check one out.

It's interesting that Rawland and Soma both introduce an aluminum, demi porteur rack around the same time.  Since the Salsa minimalist rack went out of production, it seems this has been missing in the marketplace for a while.  (and the minimalist rack was a long rack, not so much a wide porteur rack)

I'm surprised Soma went with welded struts.  Replaceable struts allow longer struts for reaching lower mounts commonly found on touring and commuting bikes.  My ideal rack design would be adjustable at both mounting points.

I just received the Rawland demi porteur rack, and tried to install it on my Rosco.  I was able to add a spacer to get it to clear the headset, but there is no way to add a spacer to clear the brake cable housing barrel.  The rack will be going on my salsa mariachi instead.

I have a Rawlands demi- porteur rack on the way for my Sam with centerpulls.
I was assured by Rawlands that the rack will work with a spacer washer to clear the headset...we'll see.
They also said the Rawlands is good for 22LBS.

Oops, I meant my rack will be going on my Salsa Marrakesh.

Clearing the headset should be doable.  You can put spacers behind the tab.  My issue was there no way to adjust the caliper brake relative to the rack in the direction I needed.

I added a large Wald to my Nitto mini front rack about 3 months ago, and added struts for reinforcement.  Commuting most days.  The setup accommodates a work bag + locks + various rain gear.  Or alternately, a gym bag and some groceries, secured with a cargo net.  Wheel flop does not spoil the ride, but it's expected that even a kickstand may not keep it from toppling over if loaded and not leaned up well...even with one of those wheel stabilizers I've tried, derp.  Having always had a back rack + fussy panniers, I appreciate how little time it takes to pull gear out of the basket compared to bags, making errands zippier.  I have yet to do any basket touring, which seems like it would be hard.
