I've been going down the archive rabbit hole and am curious of the bunch's thoughts (opinions).

What is the best factory Rivendell paint color to date?

Give me your hot takes - and photos if you've got 'em.

Almost too much to think about but, the original Atlantis is the most iconic Riv color? I am partial to several of the “greenish” bikes including the dark green early Clems, the later bronzey green ones & the current lime olive. That said, the purple Rosco Platy rocks. Too hard!

My top three might be: lime olive, dark gold, Riv blue. Probably in that order.

For me it's gotta be the few raw frames they did with clear powder coat. A Glorious and Bombadill come to mind.

The classic butternut color...or whatever it was called. The best

Most nostalgic:  The A. Homer Hilsen blue as featured in the assembling a bike video.  I've seen darker shades, but prefer that lighter one.  That was my intro to RBW.

Most iconic:  Atlantis blue/green.  Of course.

Favorite:  The dark green of the first run of Clem's.  Goes great with black components, as seen in a Vinmeo video about shifters.  It's also similar to the color of my first bike, a Trek 730 in "Ice Green".  If I'm ever in a position to choose a color for a Rivendell, it will be Clem Green.

Rambouillet orange with the pearlescent gold sheen. (Honorable mention for Atlantis and for Rivendell blue.)

Does clear coat over raw metal count as a color? What I love about the absence of opaque paint is the multitude of colors that show through — as in our Glorius pictured here — and how starkly it reveals the hand of the builder. There’s the silvery blueish steel metal; the grayish brown and reddish hues of surface oxidation; black speckled artifacts (from the flux paste? the torch?); and the golden bronze brazing material contrasting with and joining together lugs and tubes. The builder’s handiwork is evident in its perfectly imperfect glory, refined and raw at the same time. It also reminds you of the creativity and gumption that brought the elegant and fun contraption to fruition. Suavis viator agrestis

I also love Hunqapillar green.

My favorite changes every few years - I was big on mustard for a long time - but right now I'm really into the blue that was on the first Clems. It's shown here in a pic from Leah's Instagram cuz I saw it there recently and went and stole it! You can see the current RBW Blue in this pic, too, but I'm highlighting the earlier version on her boy's H model. I detect a bit of green in it, too. This may be the same color on the Betty, I've always loved that one with the red hearts.

Of course I love the Dove Grey and Rad Red (Joe Bell's red name) on my custom, but that's cheating!

The Rambouillet orange has to be the top for me.  Not really a standard paint but the pea sage was a common color for customs in the past. I though that color looked great with the cream head tube paint. Third would be the light blue metallic that was also a common color on customs.

Here are two of mine:

That pea sage is great!

I am partial to shades of green. My Clem Lime Olive is fantastic but the flagship Atlantis green is my favorite I think. The color is the same greenish-blue as the inside of old Russian/Soviet submarines per Rivendell's description and is soothing to the eye.

No one’s going to mention the grey and red Hunq color? That’s a great scheme.

Though for most iconic, I have to say Riv blue. It seems like it was the color featured in all of the original pictures.

How about Matte Flanker Green on the Original Rosco Bubbe V1? Pardon the GBW frame in the way, but this was the best picture of the color that I have.

"Is it cheating if I say the best is this one?"

It's not cheating if Grant makes Bicycle Belle Raspberry a production color. Put it on a 30th Anniversary Mixte, GP! 🙌

Another vote for the red-grey Hunquapillar. There was a custom cyclocross bike with the same scheme on the old Riv staff bikes that I spent too much time staring at.

hunq.jpg

Also a vote for the grilver Clem H. I own one, and it is a very nice, understated scheme. Goes really well with the classic olive green Carradice bags.

Cheers,
Johnny

I think it's nearly impossible to pick an all time best color- Riv has had too many fabulous ones!
My buddy who was a big-wig at Surly once said to me "Rivendell always has the best colors!"

This one - an early Mountain - has always stuck with me, but it's a one-off so I don't know if that counts.  I do wish Rivendell would do more brown-tones.    I almost bought this one for my wife once, but it was too big.  Hopefully someone here owns it now.

Many have touched on these classics, which constitute 3 of my 4 favorites:

Early Riv blue
Toyo Atlantis green (which I call Smyrna green)
Sam orange

I'll throw in one more: All Rounder bronze/brown as seen here.

I am very partial to the mustard that some older Clems came in – I would immediately jump at the opportunity to buy a mustard Clem H.

Also love the dark gold the recent Sams came in, and the current Homer blue.

My favorite color has to be the deep purple of my original - and soon to be reincarnated custom.

I will admit I am a big fan of the orange creamsicle as well. Especially now that I have an orange creamsicle Ram to look at every day.

I forgot to add that the Ford Blue powdercoat on my 1999 gofast is far, far prettier than the rose on Leah's Platypus. Oh my, by far!

My color-of-first-choice is not a Riv-offered color, but it is the color of my last remaining (out of 5) Rivendells: Ford Blue, no damned cream accents. I had a nice powdercoat done to the 1999 (about which you've heard far more than you want to hear) after C Matthews's alterations, to replace the original Top Drawer metallic Navy with Cream Joe Bell job. Me, for blue, there's no blue like Ford Blue, and the duller finish compared to the sparkly Navy + clearcoat actually, IMO, makes the shade look even better. The powdercoater IIRC was a local who has done much good bicycle finishing; recall the "liquid" effect of the pale blue powdercoat of the 1958 Herse; the shade came close to the original but faded Herse blue but looked, IMO, better by far.

But, shoot, C Matthews's last powdercoat vendor is not nearly as good as the earlier one; the otherwise very pretty sage green powdercoat (I vote this Color #2) on the 2020 AM-hub road bike is lumpy in places.

I'll spare you another photo.

I still think the original Romulus color is one of the best there was! Here is one example when I owned it: https://www.flickr.com/photos/franklyn/324768705/in/album-72157600050554321/

I also got it repainted at one point and it turned out really well, though obviously it wasn't a stock paint job (though it was by the designated painter for Riv at the time): https://www.flickr.com/photos/franklyn/447923553/in/album-72157600050554321/

Franklyn: Both of those Blues! Outstanding.
