I have a reservation for a campsite in Gualala (California Mendocino area) and would love to bring the family bikes. We've been to the area before and never brought bikes. Can anyone recommend any cool places to bike there that are kid friendly for riders who aren't that cautious cycling on a highway, for example? If you have a recommended ride there I can start researching what might be best for us.

Riv content: I will likely bring my Atlantis, of which I will take great photos in that gorgeous area.

My kids had a great time riding around the campground and out to the beach.  As I recall the trail to the beach was not designed for bikes, but our 9-12 year olds manage, we walked.  You could also bike into town for ice cream from the campground.  We then spent a couple nights at Salt Point State Park and we did some more riding there.  They promote some mountain bike trails, but you can also ride down to and along the coast from your campsite.  We brought our Sam, a beautiful purple Glorious, a saved from the junk yard and refurbished mt bike and REI kids bike.  I didn't take the photos for Riv content, but you get glimpse of the bikes and experience.

I know it’s not about the purple Glorius, but 🤩. I saw that bike and thought, we have got to introduce this woman and her bike to Ana, of PurpleRiv fame. Ana’s got a custom in a deeper purple and it is basically a Glorius. These two would get along!

Thanks for your reply. The scenery there is gorgeous (bikes included!)
I guess what I am wondering is if there are any favorite trails people have to recommend in that area, we can put the bikes on the car to get there if necessary (sometimes the only way to get to the ride with young kids.)
Can be mildly technical MTB or paved or gravel, our bikes do it all. :)

I camped at Mckerricher state park a few weeks ago, near Fort Bragg, and found a couple of good rides. One is along the coast, between Fort Bragg and Mckerricher. This is a paved, very flat trail. The next ride is in the Jackson State Demonstration Forest, near Mendocino. I started fairly high up the slope, along the Forest History trails. This was very steep, I wouldn't recommend it too highly, unless you want steep MTB action.

When I got to the lower portions of the trails, I had a lot of fun riding along the Big River. It was relatively flat, smooth soil with some gravel. I didn't go all the way along the trail, due to time, but it had to be a couple of miles long at least. This would be from the intersection of Road 700 & Road 730. I think Trailforks calls this the Big River Haul Road, and it looks like it goes all the way to Mendocino.

I found a site describing a new trail in this area with a bit of climbing, it's the Observatory Trail. Below are a couple of links that may be helpful.
