Tomorrow I’m going to be teaching my 8th grade students the blessings and curses of Jacksonian Democracy, but all I’ll really be thinking about is my orange Sam Hillborne currently under construction at my LBS.  How are the wheels coming along?  Have the spokes arrived yet?  How will the light mount to the front rack?
But the build questions are NOTHING compared to the ride anticipations.
Where shall I take it first?  The usual loop around Forest Park?  Commute to school?  Or will it be somewhere new, just between me and Sam?

Hillborne!

You’re probably getting the best of all Riv models.

Congratulations on your Sam! They’re superb.
Mine is going on 5 years old. Still loving it.

Best,

Nathan, I can feel your excitement from way over here! Oh, a Rivendell is a game-changer. Let me tell you about all the things you get to look forward to.

1. When you walk by your bike in the garage, even if you aren’t heading out for a ride, you will glance at your Sam, and you will smile. No one will understand this.
2. You will develop the urge to ride, even when you have more pressing matters to attend to. You will make up errands you deem ‘necessary’ so you can throw a leg over your bike and sail off, guilt-free.
3. You will find ways to work your bike into conversations. Even if those conversations are happening with non-bike folks. There will be photos on your iPhone, and you will pounce on opportunities to share them.
4. You will haunt this List and bond with other Sam-owners.
5. You will get an Instagram account so you have an outlet for posting gratuitous photos of your Sam. You will become proficient in hashtags. #whatinsamhill is my suggestion.
6. You will neglect your close relationships. This will occur because you will get on your Sam, find a rhythm and never want to go home again. “Just one more mile,” you will say.
7. You will develop an expensive Sackville habit.
8. You will have recurring nightmares that your bike will be stolen, so you’ll pony up for another Rivendell when the opportunity arises. (I’m not kidding; I have this one - but it always ends with me finding a spare Betty Foy frame I never knew I had in the back of my garage.)

Does that about cover it, Friends?

I think Forest Park is like Maple Street, ie, lots of places have one.

Certainly, hence my asking. I'll have a Sam soon enough so it was a cool coincidence to see that another might be in my borough.

I was about to say nyc doesn't have a maple st, funnily enough, but it seems it does, albeit in a hood I don't visit, ever.

Forest Park in St. Louis, MO! The premier city park of the Midwest, of course.

Ha!  I had the same thought as a former Queens resident myself.  Rivs are a rare site in NYC.

First time I saw one in the wild was actually in East Nashville last October at Grimey's record store.
2 sightings now in StL.  One in Forest Park and one in my neighborhood of Richmond Heights.  Nice people every time!

And the thing is, I already have a small Trunk Sack and a small Saddle Sack.  I'm screwed for sure!

I just got my first Rivendell this past Saturday and it's been life-changing! I've owned several bikes over the years, but this bike surpasses them all!

Suspended Animation.  Stopped in to the LBS to monitor Sam’s progress.  Found him hung up on the wall, like Han Solo, frozen in Carbonite in perfect hibernation.  It’s been 64 degrees in St. Louis the last 3 days.  Do you know how rare that is?  We get maybe 8 days a year TOTAL when it’s not 95 or 35.  The good news is the wheels are being built today and the last group of parts arrives tomorrow, other than the rack Mark’s Rack I had to buy from Rivendell and the Head Light coming from Amazon UK.
