I've bought a sage Sam from another RBW list member... Woohoo!

So of course I'm daydreaming about how to build it up while I await shipping.... For now it will be a drop-bar Sam.

Would love to see what color bar tape folks have used on these. I'm sure it would look great with the gold/amber color I've used before, but wondering what else folks have done. Anyone care to share links to their Sage Sammy pics?

cheers,
Jack

Grant mentioned once that the sages didn't sell well, and I'm just as surprised as he was. I think they're gorgeous, with the interesting plus of working well with black components. That's unusual for Rivs.

I bought a well-loved Sam from a fellow list member a couple years back - I've kept it with 46cm noodles through a few changes - swapped the standard riv-ish drivetrain for Shimano mountain kit, and switched out the leather Brooks sadde for a Cambium, different fenders and tires here and there, and settled on leather bar tape, first brown and now honey after matching shellacked white cotton tape to cream longboard fenders and then trying some green fizik tape. Some pictures of the iterations:

Congratulations on your new Sam!
Not my bike, but there are good pics of Sam in Blue Lug (a Riv dealer shop in Japan) website:
https://bluelug.com/contents/rivendell/sam-hillborne-complete.php
Scroll down to see gallery.
Not many Sage Sams, though.

Jack,

I didn't have my Sage Hillborne too long, but here are the only pictures I took of it.

Mine were dark grey. I didn't get around to shellacking it. I probably would've gone black next time around.

I have an orange Sam and the original bar tape was a sort of sage-turquoise color--it looked great. I'm imagining orange tape, possibly with amber shellac, or the burnt orange with clear, would look fantastic on your bike. Maroon with clear would look cool, too, possibly with some grey mixed in for good measure.

Congrats on the new-to-you steed!

Bob

Richard is right, that's a great gallery of Sams on the Blue Lug site. Thanks Takashi!

You will love your Sam! You can configure it so many different ways...
When I first ordered my Sam I wasn't sure I'd like the Sage color. They were out of the blue.
Now I love it with the cream fenders., honey Brooks 17 and Brooks honey leather bar tape.
It has a Pass & Stow front rack with medium Wald basket,,Pletscher rear rack. Since these pics were taken I have added  a Son front hub with front and rear lights.

Sweet setup Jon, giving me some good ideas.

Lately I'm partial to brown or gumwall tires, but all-black tires look great on the sage Sams, like Joe mentioned. The cream fenders are a great touch.

Good to see these shots... I have the brown LBB tires on my Campeur and was thinking of moving them over to Sammy for now.

Jeff,

What size/brand are those knobby tires in the last few pictures in the series?

Love the multiple iterations--they all look great and have given me new ideas on how to build one up.

Awaiting the FedEx truck today to bring me my SH frameset I ordered from Riv--I will be building it up as a drop-bar roadie with Compass Bon Jon Pass tires to start. Still need to source brake levers though.

I've ordered an orange Sam frame set that is due in soon. Can anyone tell me if the orange color on the new frames will be the same as the orange bike in the Bluelug photos? I'm going to do mine with upright bars too.

Those are Bruce Gordon Rock n' Roads 700x43. I bought the woody fenders split in two segments per wheel just for those tires, but after a few off-road rides, I found the general suggestion that fenders+knobby tires are risky to hold true. The tires were great on tour last year over much mixed surface riding, but I'm back to rolling on Compass Barlow Pass tires.

Here's an album with some pics of my Sage Sam. The albatross bars currently wear maroon cloth tape (not shellacked) which I think goes well with the sage.

Great shots, Richard. Seems our builds will be similar.

The Hillborne frame arrived safe & sound (62cm paint blemish on the Riv site saved me $150 and for the life of me, I can't find any blemishes). It took me nearly an hour just to get it out of the box, unpacked, and into my work stand. Very well packed. It really is a handsome machine.

Here's a photo of where I've gotten it so far--mostly bits taken off another bike (Velo Orange Pass Hunter--a nice bike but too small). Included in the build:
  • Brooks Cambium, Nitto Seatpost
  • Velocity A23 wheels
  • Compass Bon Jon Pass tires (700x35mm)
  • Nitto Noodle Bar
  • Deore RD with a 9-speed 12-36 cassette
  • Ultegra FD
  • Ultegra Compact Crankset (until I replace it)
  • Tektro R559 & Nitto Tallux (both from Riv)
  • Shimano Bar end shifters (A keen eye will see those are STI levers on it now--I still need to get brake levers but wanted to sit on it and get a feel for it).
A standard 114 link chain is too small, so no chain yet. And no cables run until I get the brake levers and permanently install the bar ends.

Interesting, Jeff. I just made the switch from Barlow Pass (great tires, BTW) to 45mm Smart Sams (no fenders).

If my back rim, my rack, rear brakes and the planets are in perfect alignment, I can squeeze them in without any rubbing - barely. My first ride was this past weekend on an incredibly gnarly but equally beautiful hill near my house. It was amazing.

Was it the just the fear of misalignment or an actual misalignment that caused you to switch?

My current thought is that I'll pack a smaller diameter folding tire in my bag for extended trips, just in case.

Best,
Marc

I tried squeezing the Rock n' Roads under my original longboard fenders, and I didn't have enough vertical clearance at the fork crown and front brake. Around the same time I had seen a blug post where they had cut and installed fenders on a Sam if I remember correctly for the same reason. I was looking for a flat, non-curved fender to possibly mitigate some of the risk of running knobby tires with fenders, and found the woody fenders.

Cody at Woody's fenders offered a "split kit" with extra hardware needed to split the front and rear fenders if needed. I had him split the front fender for me as I knew for sure I'd need it there, and bought the extra hardware from him in case I needed to split the rear as well. Per my recollection I don't think it NEEDED to split the rear, but it gave a bit more wiggle room in doing so.

Here's s couple pics that I took when I initially did the install:

I found that with fenders and knobby tires, riding in gravel, I had a few incidents where rocks got caught up and theater bed to do bad things. I only took the rock n' roads off because I haven't been using Sam for off-road riding since my last tour. They're great tires, he just spends most of his time on the pavement now, so Compass tires get the nod.
