Anybody else heading to Nutmeg later this month?  I'll be riding my gray and kidney bean Hunqapillar and I'll have a table at the swap meet.  It'll be my third Nutmeg - it's such a good time - but first time at the new location, and also the first Nutmeg with my Rivendell and not my old Surly LHT.  (I was travelling for work last year - boo!)

I'm planning on it!  Potentially on my Hunqapillar, unless I manage to figure out my Rosco Bubbe mountain mixte drivetrain and finish the build in time :)

I've never done the Nor' Easter - any tips are appreciated -, I did go to the Spring Fling which was a ton of fun.

PS. Thunderburts for the win.

Please forgive the tangent, but can you say how well the Thunderburts roll compared to other similar tires, in particular — a reach, here — to the RH Oracle Ridge?

Also:

Do they corner well on pavement?

Do they hold sealant well — sidewall or bead seep?

How well or badly do they resist punctures?

I love my Oracle Ridges but they don’t play nearly as nicely with sealant as the Schwalbe tires I’ve used (ultralight Big One and ultralighter Furious Fred, both considerably lighter than the Oracle Ridge).

I’ve got my eye out for substitutes: about 50 true mm on 27 mm IW rims, tubeless, small knobs for some sand traction but to allow decent pavement rolling, rounded versus square profile for nice pavement cornering, prefer extra light but only if work well with Orange Seal Endurance, as my other Schwalbes have done.

I’d be happy to hear of other possibilities comparable in rolling and pavement handling to the Oracles, Schwalbe or other makers.

Thanks.

I think thunderburts strike the perfect balance between on/off road - I run them tubeless without issues at all (no seeping or anything like that at all)

For me (I go slow) they corner very well on pavement and I've taken them through pretty rough New England trails with roots, rocks, etc and they've held up very well with no punctures.

My new Rosco Bubbe build will have endurance knobbie RH but I haven't tried them yet, so can't compare them.

the Teravail Ehline is also a good off-road tire that has a good rolling resistance for pavement, and seems to work really well with sealant. I actually haven’t had any Teravail tires that didn’t do well as tubeless (something I can’t say 100% for RH, as nice as they are).

oh wow, this looks both cool and stressful!  for those that have attended, possible to do most of the rides on a singlespeed?  how is the camping availability?

i cant do this year but for anyone going from NYC, how do you handle getting there?  drive up?  i'll definately consider the one in the spring or next year so if anyone wants to group together please post a message!

Re-heading this message:

Thanks, Max; the TBs are now on my “Alternatives to the OR” list.

Next question, to all: What about the Soma Cazadero, in the 622X50 mm size? This gets good reviews, including a “4 thumbs up” by CyclingAbout, tho’ I recall Jan panned it several years ago when — I think — it was made only in the 42 mm size.

What to RBW-listers who have used the Cazadero think about it’s directional stability on deep, loose surfaces (gravel, sand) and its rolling resistance and, especially, how it corners, on pavement?

I'll be there, rode my Sam last year but this year I plan to use my Tanglefoot.

This year is my first year and plan on doing the opposite - riding my Sam which is a new build instead of my tanglefoot. Any reason why you’re switching this year? Is it more of a mtb ride?

Have you checked out the videos and photos from previous years?  Also - Ronnie Romance usually posts the routes the week before the ride, including a tire width recommendation for each route, it feels like 38/42's are usually the recommended minimum.

I haven’t checked the videos. I’m coming off of gorey hollows with analog cycles and not in the mood for hiking so I’m going to lean towards road and gravel if those are options.

I'll be there on my mermaid Platypus maxxed out with 2.25" Super Yummy's. And yeah, they're always pretty last-minute about routes. Expect 'em to show up next Wednesday or Thursday. As of now the weather is looking near-perfect this year, a nice change from last year's torrential rains.

Hope to see y'all there!

I was fine on my Sam last year on Ultra Dynamico Cavas I think they were 42s. I did the medium chunky 35 mile ride. This year I'm planning to do the full chonk ride.
This being said, my crank and bottom bracket just broke. If I cant get it fixed in time I'll be on my Sam again, which is anything but a terrible situation!

Hope to see you all there, I haven’t decided what I’m gonna run, I have done the NorEaster on a few different bikes, there is no perfect bike or tire for this stuff, your either gonna go down the paved parts like a farm tractor or cringe on the ruff stuff. Just for something different, I may stick to the paved and smooth dirt roads this year. Maybe Sam on 38s or even the Heron on 33s…they are both light enough to hike with if needed…unless I see the routes when posted and go with a more robust bike/tire combo.
I also will have a table, come over and say hello…I will have candy and maybe a little whisky?

If anyone wants to start early and go slow…
50 miles with a ferry boat ride, mostly country road

My crew is going to be doing the ATB 55, maybe with an early shortcut to cut it down to 45, if anyone wants to link up.  I'm the guy with the beard and the Hunq :)

What a blast! We had perfect fall weather and the rides were really fun - I ended up joining the Cambridge Bicycles crew and we did 58m of mixed road, trail and some very chunky stuff up in the woods. There was a ferry crossing which was fun with 45-50 bikes in there and also an amazing stop at Peter Weigle's shop which is always a treat.

The ride was meant to be road and smooth gravel for the most part, but I could barely keep up with my 2.1" Thunderburts and even had to hike-a-bike in a few spots. The Hunqapillar rose to the challenge and the tires kept me safe (a couple of people washed out in the sand, gravel, etc)  All in, we took about 8h with multiple stops to refuel and rest.

It was fun to meet some folks from the bunch and to admire the hundreds of beautiful bikes including many Rivendells old and new. Some nice Sackville bags for sale in the tag sale, although I didn't get any.

I documented some of the bikes and the ride below (apologies for the bad photos and many on the non-drive side, but it's what I could get)

Hope you enjoy:

I was exhausted yesterday - the Mixed Nuts 55 was no joke - but it was a great time.  Next year I'm going to do a ride that hits J.P. Weigle's workshop - that sounded like it was very cool.

The roads up there are so narrow and windy it’s like an acid trip. Did the 57. And it had just enough chunk!

Yes! It was another successful Nutmeg and lots more Rivendells than previous years. I followed the country road route backwards, crossed the river on the bridge and went south to the ferry with a side quest to Gillette Castle. I think I passed you guys at the ferry. The tag sale was great and I sold more than I bought for a change!
