Just wanted to share the only bike I think will be in my stable for ever. It's a 54cm Hunq. I'm pretty sure it's Taiwan made, since it doesn't have Waterford etched into the drop out. I've been working on this bike for 18 months to get it here, and I'm finally happy with where I've landed. The only immediate changes might be... changing the 'tross bars to Billie bars. It's also set up for quick swaps in case I want to use Bullmoose bars that day.

Enjoy. Happy to answer questions.

That's a nice bike! Could be Toyo but probably Waterford, to my knowledge this model was never produced in Taiwan (and certainly not priced that way). There may be a 'W" in the serial number.

Nikko send that photo or serial to my man Richard Schwinn and he'll know for sure.

Very nice! Out of curiosity, do you know your PBH? And, whats your saddle height in the photo? `

Thanks!

PBH is ~86-87cm
Saddle Height in the photo is probably closer to 75cm. My suggested saddle height from fits is ~75.5cm-76cm for my more spirited bikes.

Thanks, for the info Nikko! I have a PBH of 90-91 cm, and just waiting for one to come along in my size! These are my favorite Rivs to date, and green to boot! I have a Sam in the stable, but really need to add one of these.

Not that it really matters, but that is a Taiwan frame, the Waterford built have different lugs on the head tube as well as a different paint job.
Waterford only did one initial production run, so, unless that is a custom order, it was built in Taiwan.

I thought Hunq frames were Waterford and forks were Taiwan? Doesn't really matter. A Hunq was my first Riv and I really regret selling it, though at the time I needed a good road bike more than I needed the Hunq.

Mine has been through a bunch of changes in the past decade, but I can't imagine better handlebars than the bullmoose Bosco Bars for the Hunq.   You might want to consider those.

No John,  I ordered from the first Taiwan production, Riv screwed up and sold mine to somebody but offered the one Waterford 54 left.   I got one by accident.  As far as I know the rest were made in Taiwan.  Not that it matters,  it's the same incredible bike except for the pointy lugs and paint.   I think all the forkswere made by Toyo of Japan.

My favorite head badge - with the Trilobites. My only disappointment with my Bombadil is that the Hunqapillar has a better head badge.

Just to confirm what Marc is saying, this is from an Hunqapillar brochure:

"The Hunqapillar frame is an interesting mix of materials and people behind it. It's our design, everything down to the last micro-detail. It’s made in Taiwan by a team of builders trained by Tetsu Ishigaki, of Toyo. The main tubes are superexpensive Japanese Kaisei 8630 heat-treated. The seat- and chainstays are perfectly good Taiwan CrMo. The fork is made in Japan by Tetsu Ishigaki at Toyo."

Best,

I think the first run or 2 is as the hunq brochure describes. They then moved to waterford and used taiwan made forks. I think thats when it switched to green but I can't confirm that. Tubing also became true temper ox/plat at waterford. Somewhere in my emails i have a list of all the differences between the first iteration and the second. I purchased a waterford back then, but was reading the brochure and trying to nail down exactly what i was getting.

My 54cm Hunq was built in 2013, and I thought I was told it was being built by Waterford, but I don't see a "W" in the serial number. Maybe I'm misremembering, or maybe I need new reading glasses?

+1 on never selling my Hunq, it's perfect for me. I can't see how anyone can use bars that come back farther than Albatross bars though. I need to use a 12-13cm stem with Alba's or I suffer from claustrophobia, even when using a lugged seat post.

Ah, that makes sense. I didn't remember that any Hunqs were built in Taiwan but I do remember the first couple runs being priced that way..it was originally the way-cheaper version of Bombadil.

I've always wondered if my Hunqapillar was a Taiwan model and I thought this thread might give me the answer, but my top headtube lug seems to be the same as yours, but the lower one is different.  I thought the orange ones all came in one batch, but maybe that's not the case?

I've got a 2015 grey/kidney bean 58 hunq that I bought new and I'm sure that one was built in Taiwan. I remember cause I was talking to Grant when I ordered it and he assured me the quality was equal to the Toyo-built bikes. It's still a great bike - wherever it came from!

I believe Rivs last run of Hunqs( Green) looked like a great bike but they did a really short run of them.    The chainstay was an in between length( 49cm) of earlier Rivs and the current longer stays.  It had less BB drop ( 71mm) and a decent stack/ reach ratio where drop bars were a little more feasible.  And it was offered in 700c and 650b in the 59cm size which was pretty neat. And possibly( I can’t remember)  no diagatube in the 59 size which turned some people off,  not me though. Another run of Hunqs would probably get a lot of interest.    -Mike

I have a 62 cm green Hunq that I bought from Riv in 2014. I believe I was told the frame came from Waterford at that time. Ordered in April 2014 and delivered July 10. I have Nitto Noodles on and use the bike as much as possible. It's a pleasant ride, though I may change the Noodles out to something more upright as I grow older. I am in my early sixties already.

I have a 53cm Hunq. I believe it's the most recently built Hunqapillar, built in 2019 by Steve Rex in Sacramento as a kind of one of thing- https://www.instagram.com/p/ByGJjRtn1ED/

It's a bit of an amalgamation of some of their most recent frame designs and I'm just smitten. It's become my only bike (other than the FS MTB and the family hauler) and I am never left wanting. The Hunq owners club is a good one to be a part of.

Well, since we're sharing Hunqs...
Here's mine laying in the fallen Ginko leaves in Japan. Built in Waterford early 2015 (Serial number begins with a 'K'. Hmm?). Since then it's been around. I like to imagine it is the bike that Sir Richard Francis Burton would have ridden from Medina to Mecca, from Zanzibar (with pack raft) to the shores of Lake Tanganyika. And, I image it will be my ride until I can ride no more.

There's a ton of Hunqapillar activity around here... it's awesome. Here's mine, it has a serial # that starts with H & I have no idea when it was built or why it's salmon colored instead of gray/orange or green. It is clearly a custom color, however I'm not sure if it was ordered this color or it was done after it's original color. It's not a Joe Bell paint job... it looks nice from afar but the paint is not high quality. I've had it just about a year... May 2021. These are older photo's, I've put metal fenders on it since. I'll update a photo soon.

I've had my Hunqapillar since 2010-2011.  I still even have the postcard and poster Riv was selling at the time.  HUNQ.jpeghunqa.jpg

Johnny - can you tell me about your frame bag?  Custom, I assume?  I'm about to make one for my 62cm Hunq and am debating whether to do one zipper like yours appears to be or two horizontal zippers with a divider.  My main use will be for storing tent poles and fly rods. (Plus a frame bag just looks perfect in that top triangle!)

Thanks for sharing, Jennings.

Yup also my favorite bike of all time.  It rides great no matter what you put it through and no bike looks like it with the diagatube.  Here is the latest iteration:

Oh my goodness!!  Where did you get the pink (or lavender?) fenders, Dave and what brand are they?  They're perfect with the dark green (and would look great on my dark green Clem).  Nice touch with the matching brake cable color.  It's all so perfectly complimentary.

Beautiful bike, Dave. How did the Surly rack work with the Riv fork? I was thinking of picking one up for my Hunq.

The fenders are pink!  They are planet bike and I don't think they are in production anymore.

The rack mounted really easily.  The side mounts move vertically so they are easy to line up with the brazeons.  It is a heavy rack but pretty bombproof.  It can fit a Wald 139 on top with two bags.  I haven't been bikepacking on it with the rack but I plan on trying it out in the next couple of weeks.  I've normally just used a basket but I really want to try the panniers.

If someone has to have pink fenders, there is this:

I have no affiliation with the sale, but I remembered spotting them while I have been searching for 2 sets of the old beige SKS fenders that are also no longer in production.

Best regards,
