Three fun nuggets in today's email update.

1. Rapid rise rear derailers!
2. A custom with naked rear dropouts
3. and with headtube mounted shifters

I can't wait to see that custom built up.

I do believe that custom belongs to Laing, as per the “So close, yet so far” thread from last month. Laing, it looks fantastic. Are you getting excited??

Yes, it is mine. Supposed to get here next Tuesday. One small correction to the email is that the centerpull braze-ons are Rene Herse, not Paul. I really love the lug outlining. The paint is supposed to have a lot of pearl in it - can't wait to see the color in person. All components will as be silver as I can make them. Even the rails on my Brooks 678 Frankensaddle are chromed instead of black.

I need to get to work building the wheels, but first I must dis-assemble the wheels that the hubs are in (currently in 700Cs on my Sam). The wheels will be polished 650B Velocity Quill rims on 36 hole Curtis Odom high flange Holey hubs (really, really high flange) with Paul skewers. Tires will be 48mm Compass Switchback Hills to start.

The rear hubs are actually 135 wide, not 130 as shown above. Front hub below shown on the Sam. Yes I like orange.

I so can’t wait to see this bike built up. I can already tell it’s gonna be quite amazing.

Do you plan on manipulating the left shifter with your left hand or your right thumb? I’m trying to visualize the space in the vicinity of the rear brake cable housing and the left shifter

I'm not Laing but I can visualize the rear brake cable being long enough to droop below the tip of the shifter as it passes by. I don't think it works interfere with pushing/pulling with the left hand.

Left hand. The handle bars will be high and I may use non-aero brake levers. It also appears that the cable stops are in the center of the top tube.

I'll look forward to seeing how the build shapes up.
