After a relationship with someone who named his cars, I started naming my bikes. My Dutch bike was named "Matilda", my Terry, "Angela", and I named my Cheviot, "Heidi". As it turns out, my logic to arrive at that name was flawed.
I thought 'Cheviot' was goat-related; great at hills, the go anywhere bike. The bike itself lives up to that billing, at least for me. It's a mixte frame bike, so it's a female in my mind, and the girl I associated with climbing hills was Heidi. (Although, now that I think of it, she was carried up a lot of those hills; hmmm, not very auspicious.)
When I finally looked closely at the bike, and saw a sheep in the decals, I was puzzled. Chevre = goat in French. Okay, so that was a leap. Turns out Cheviot is a type of sheep. Gee, that's a grazer. How did Riv come up with that name? If the bike was masculine, it might be named Ferdinand, as at least that is a grazer.
I think the lesson is to return to my childhood method of naming things. Hamster was 'Hammy'. Rabbit was 'Bunny Boo', cat was 'Minou' (kitty in french). So, I think Heidi shall be rechristened "Bikey". Or "Bika". Or maybe the whole naming thing has run its course. It's not like she comes when she is called. And I no longer have multiple bikes so it is not as if there is confusion when I simply refer to "my bike".
Happy trails.
