Hi all,

I've been riding in the MUSA shorts with aussie wool underneath for longer rides and am looking for some replacement shorts. Now that these are discontinued anyone have any suggestions of similar gusseted shorts with no pad?

Alternately anyone have any large Musas they want to get rid of?

Thanks,

Todd

These are a bit different but I've had a pair for a couple of years and I love them.

Goruck short work well too. Wait for a sale though.

I use plain old multi purpose athletic shorts now that my MUSA supply is dwindling.  I have bought one pair of shorts from Chrome.  They are really nice and I will probably buy more from them in the future.

I’ve been wondering the same thing recently and figured Patagonia Baggies are pretty close to my MUSA shorts. I haven’t purchased any yet to confirm but likely will in the coming weeks.

I have the Grey MUSA knickers, still going ten years later... just picked up a pair of shorts from Kavu, really love the fit and material.

I usually use just a basic pair of Patagonia shorts but I second the Chrome shorts/knickers. I bought a pair second hand once for CHEAP, it has some mild padding.

Swrve is suppose to be a awesome bicycle clothing line. I’ve never used them personally.

Western rise has a pair that I like a lot. Great for swimming too.

Been wondering the same, good thread. Was gonna get some patagonia baggies, but do they have an underwear liner like swim trunks?

Olympic uniforms makes bicycle patrol uniforms for police, fire, and ems. Top quality stuff. Cargo pockets. With or without chamois. They also have a clearance section that run about 27.00 each if you can find your size. http://jmarcelenterpris.qwestoffice.net/

Drew, baggies do have a mesh liner like a swimming suit.

Too bad Riv stopped making the MUSA shorts. I'm wearing mine today and they are cut well with plenty of pocket room. Bring 'em back!

Drew-- the Naturals version of the Baggies do not have a liner.  I recently ordered a couple of pairs.  They are very comfortable around the house, but I haven't tried them on the bike as we've been having cool weather here.

There are no shorts like the MUSA shorts! I have two pairs and the elastic wore out so I threaded some webbing and a buckle through and use them like that.
In addition, I like the Patagonia Terrebone shorts.
There are lighter, I am sure less durable, but feel like you have almost nothing on AND can walk around town in them and look fairly normal. Also a little longer than the baggies and a little more flexible/stretchy, if you are into that. And no liner.

Actually I forgot. The topo designs river shorts are really darn close to my musa shorts.

Pardon as i've no experience w the MUSA short but this is another MUSA brand.

I used to recall them making things a bit more simple, but the website was also a lot more simple once upon a time so maybe they've fancied everything up.

Second vote for the KAVA.
I also have a couple pair of elastic waist Prana. They're OK, but the elastic isn't very strong so if you have heavy things in your pockets . . .

I don't think they are similar to the MUSA, but my favorite riding shorts right now are actually made by Dockers!!!???
I got mine over a year ago, so I don't know if they still make them, but they are the Smart 360 Flex Chino Short.
I had seen these and was curious about them, but they were $59. A pair. A bit much for shorts to me. Then they had them for 25% off @ Macy's so I got a pair!
Well, they fit great! They are stretchy so you can & should buy them a little snugger than normal, but they don't bind. Stretchy waistband as well, but with belt loops so you can wear a belt!
I like them so much I bought another couple pair on sale and then I noticed Macy's would frequently have them on their "last Call" racks, so I bought another 4 or 5 pair for 20ish bucks a pair. I gave a pair to my riding buddy and he likes'em as well. My son also likes them.
My one & only complaint is there's a small zippered pocket on the right side and the zipper ALWAYS breaks, generally the first time you try to use it. Not a big deal except forever after that your hand just wants to naturally go in that pocket & without a zipper it's basically worthless, too small & stuff doesn't want to stay in there.
Last thing I like about these is they come in Camouflage; 2 different Camo's!!!!! Grey or jungle! 🤙🏼

I have never actually used the MUSA shorts from Riv but I liked the look and searched for something similar. What I have been using are some hybrid board shorts I found at target. They are not gusseted however they are very thin and light. Dry quickly and have the mesh pockets. I have been using them at the beach as well as all kinds of rides since I got them and love them.

They are fairly cheap compared to riding style shorts too. I believe I found them on sale, so bonus if you can wait them out!

I've owned at least 1 pair of MUSAs as well as many other makes/models/brands, and the ultimate, ne plus ultra of cycling shorts, IME, for comfort, looks, details, quality, and ... and ... and ----- roadies don't laugh at you, is:

Very nice, and I am picky -- and frankly, find that riding in cut-off khakis 90% as comfortable and convenient.

Really, all kidding aside, the Raphas are nice, tho' why they put the wallet pocket on the right instead of the left, as God commanded Moses on Sinai, is something that keeps me awake at night. But that's a minor quibble. They are nice.

I don't roll the hems as the fool in the photo does; no need to do so.

I bought a pair of the KAVU Big Eddy river shorts based off this thread. I like them a lot. I like the MUSAs a little better - they have heavier-duty fabric and the hems are double stitched - but these are a close second. Thanks for the advice!
